So I finally got around to buying myself a new graphics card today, a shiny new 9600gt, except i now know my power supply isnt up to scratch.

A warning popped up telling me that the cards settings had been lowered and that I should replace the power supply. Can I still use my rig until the power supply is changed (tomorrow i hope) or should i just turn it off and wait?

FWIW, the power supply is an old Dell 305w, well under the rec specs I have now learnt. Im more interested in the message telling me the card is powering itself back to compensate. Thus allowing me to use it?

With this rig being underpowered that much, I personally would not advise you to use it until you get a decent 550 watt power supply in there.

Darn, my team mate vladimirb is much faster at typing than I am so he beat me to it again. Anyhow, he gives good advice.

Its a Dell power supply, original with the tower when I bought it...um...3 years ago?

I pretty much knew this would be the recommended suggestion. Which hurts so badly, Ive got 3 games installed (one new and two mmo Betas) that Im DIEING to play. Ugh.

Oh well, power supply tomorrow.

I havent bought a new PS yet, only realised the other one wasnt good enough a couple hours ago after installing the card. Its not 8pm where I live, so I will get a PS tomorrow. I'll let the comp techs know I need atleast a 550w PS.

Considering Ive got an old Dell tower, Im guessing that a new power supply might end up causing even more problems based on just how hard it is to fit non-Dell parts into Dell towers. Oh well, its time for a brand new computer anyway.

For what its worth the old PSU is a L305N-00.

I'll post again tomorrow night when I get home.

Based on where I work, and the computer shops closest to me, plus the budget I have to spend, I'll probably go with this unit, as its in stock, and within my price range:

Antec Basiq Plus BP-550 550W

Manufacturer's website : www.antec.com
Product Code : PWPSAX-ANBP055
