Hello!

My jeep started having starting problems over the course of about two weeks. It started out as the battery was low (just above orange on the volt meter) and it would take a little bit to start it.

Then it completely stopped starting. All the lights come on, you can hear the fuel injection clicking, but no starter clicking. I put a new battery in it and still nothing. Husband was convinced the starter was bad. Well, when he finally looked at it (after 3 weeks of sitting!) he put his remote starter on it and the Jeep started and ran. So, he says it's not the starter.

We checked all the fuses & relays, they all are in working order. I found a few threads on this forum that suggested maybe the ignition switch? How do I check it without taking apart the whole steering column first? This Jeep has an Airbag in the steering wheel if that matters. Also, it's an automatic with all power windows/locks and the factory security system.

Hubby thinks it has to do with the security system and not the ignition switch. He has it rigged with the remote starter right now and it's running fine but I don't want that as the long term solution!

Thank you for any suggestions!

Good Afternoon Vidahlia, it is possible that your battery or alternator had an initial problem as suggested by the "orange" description and eventually the low voltage caused everything to fail.

I suggest obtaining a Haynes Manual from your auto supermarket specific for that vehicle and seeing if that may shed light on your problem.

If it may have been possible that your alternator has a problem it could allow the battery to become discharged and produce that kind of problem possibly by the alarm losing it's programming, but there are other gadgets in Jeeps that can be very confusing trying to work out problems.

In some cases a control module is powered by the ignition switch that controls a lot of circuits and may in turn be controlled by the alarm system and this gets a bit complicated.

I would suspect there is nothing wrong with your ignition switch.

Others will have different ideas.

Cheers, qldit.
