My brother's cheap/circuit city/nec computer, his 40x drives lights
up. Windows see's the drive, but when you put a CD in it. It say's
there's no disk, I'm thinking its dead! I no about if you have it set
on cable, you should use a 80-conductor cable. Or set on master or slave you should use a 40-conductor cable. But how can you tell the differenise?

dirty lens

it is my thought that the lens is so dirty it cannot read the disc at all. try a cd-rom lens cleaning disc, although they dont do alot. before you throw the drive away you might see if you can have someone clean it. otherwise the drive is junk.
