when i try to start my 2000 silverado wit a 4.3 it turnsover but doesnt try to start until i release the key why

The timing is off or the primary ignition circuit is not switching to the proper firing sequence. Use a spark tester on each of the spark plug wires, have an assistant crank the engine and note the duration of the spark's firing. Is it intermittent ? Or does it fire right after the key is turned off ?
