2 computers 1 harddrive same time

Might be a dumb question but I can't find a solid answer.

I have an external hard drive that I want to connect to two machines at the same time and be able to access/add/change/ect files from both machines at the same time. Is this possible? Would I need a split USB cable? I'm thinking a cable that on one end has USB connection and the other end has two USB connections.

Thanks for help!

Yes you can connect the external drive to both PC's.
Some USB Y cables use a standard USB and some use a Mini USB connection on the single end.
