170 W power supply + 300 W video card??

I know this sounds really stupid, but I have a 170W psu and I'm looking at getting a better video card, because my chipset is crap. Most of the video cards I have seen ask for a 250-300 W power supply. I've done some research, and some of what I've seen says that a 300W video card could be used with a lower power supply without any problems, that the requirements advertiesd are in extreme conditions. So my question is, could I get a 250-300W video card, and use it, without upgrading my power supply? (that is expensive)

I am by no means an expert on this but I have done some building. You would not want to upgrade your video card without purchasing a better PSU. Your 170W psu is most likely a cheap piece of junk. You can get a decent 450W PSU fairly cheap. I don't always recommend them but if you are looking to save some $ you could get a thermaltake 430W PSU at best buy for $49.99. You have to have the power in order to push a more powerfull GPU.
Also because of your GPU wanting to suck up some power it could ultimately make your pc shut itself down to protect itself.
If you do not replace your PSU and purchase the GPU then it is possible you will end up replacing both because of hardware failure.

I'm trying to stay at $60 or below if at all possible. I saw a 400W at best buy yesterday for $49.99 so I know it can be done.

Forget about the watts for now. For a PCIE card to work properly it needs a minimum of 28 AMPS on the +12V rail, preferably 40A.

The +12V rail is what powers the graphics card, CPU and hard drive. 400W PSUs don't have enough +12V amps, which is why we don't recommend them for PCIE cards.

If the PSU you want to buy doesn't list the +12V amps on the box or label, then don't buy it.

It will also need a minimum 'Efficiency Rating' of 80%. Anything lower than this means the PSU is junk, not worth buying.
