The K7 boards are socket 462, meaning that the CPUs they accept must have 462 pins. the X2 3800 comes in socket 939 and AM2 forms, which are 939 pins and 940 pins, completely incompatible with the older K7 chips and vice versa.
What is your budget? We will also need to know all your other components. Use Everest from my sig to make a report. Also, what form factor is your case? ATX or mATX? I am assuming you have AGP graphics, so that will limit your selection a lot.

Is this a laptop by ant chance? If it is, you won't be able to just switch out the motherboard with a standard ATX. And you didn't mention what form factor motherboard you had. You can make a report using Everest. Download it, open it up, and just create a report of everything with the report wizard and post it.
