Plenty of good books out there like A+ Guide to PC Hardware Maintenance and Repair by Michael Graves. When a friend wants to throw away an old computer, get it and as many as you can and start "tinkering".

If you're interested in the software side of computing repair and /or want to go beyond just hardware, try Windows internals sixth edition

The technicians employed by telecom companies and companies like Geeksquad rarely actually know anything about computers, often they are trained by the company on a very limited scope of software / hardware and are under strict policies about how to 'fix' a problem, often ripping people off for hundreds of dollars for no reason.

Many people learn by fiddling with computers themselves over the course of many years. Some will self-study by Googling a lot, over and over. Others will go to school, a surefire way to learn all you need. Yet some others will earn perhaps the best method: Certification. Entry-level certifications such as MCP and A+ are great to start with but are costly.
