On my 2011 iMac - for years the icons stayed in the place I dragged them to - after I upgraded to El Capitan - when I turn on the Mac - all the icons stack up on the right side of the screen.
I have tried every "Sort By" option - still the same.

if anybody has the secret to making them stay put - it will be much appreciated.

Have you tried setting the "Sort By" to "None"

Also make sure the "Snap To Grid" option is NOT Checked.
