I got the right hook up cable to connect the mac to the TV. It worked fine at first, then all of a sudden it doesn't see the TV display any more. I went into the system preference and click on the detect display, and nothing happens. There is nothing under the display tab showing the TV. Any idea what happen and can it be corrected?

I would:

Reboot device.

1. Try hooking the laptop and cable to a different TV and see if that works.
2. Try hooking the laptop up to the same TV with a DIFFERENT cable... and see if that works.

I do need to mention that I am unable to tried a different cable that goes directly into the labtop ... just the HDMI extension cable. I have no way to check the part that goes directly to the mac. Is it possible it is bad?

The Mini DVI display port would need to be converted to HDMI with an adapter. That Mini to HDMI adapter needs to be checked and possibly replaced. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201853

That cable I bought sure did fail pretty quick. I'll order another. I found out that the 2008 macs have to have an adapter with audio support otherwise no sound. Going with this one ...
