Hello. Lately I've been seeing a lot of graphical issues on everything that look like compression artifacts. I figured that before, on my smaller screen I just couldn't see them and they were just normal on TV shows and most people didn't care.

But it's happening in video game cutscenes (not in actual gameplay, though).

You might not be able to see these problems, it might just be me, but here goes nothing - these are from the opening cinematic in Hitman Absolution. Mainly noticeable in the edges, and also on the back of his head: (no real spoilers, literally first few seconds):

Link two

Link three

It's also happened in Max Payne 3 but I'm sure those screenshots will suffice.

So is this normal or is it some sort of problem with my computer? Even if you can't see them, can you just assume that I can and still try to diagnose my problem? Here are my specs:

GPU: AMD Sapphire HD7970 Vapor-X GHZ Edition
CPU: Intel i53570k
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 16GB @ ~1600mhz
Cooler: Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E EXTREME
PSU: Corsair TX750w
SSD: Samsung 830 256GB
HD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB

All my graphical drivers are up to date as far as I'm aware (using Catalyst 12.11).

So, any ideas?

Here's a secondary problem which may just be a bug with Hitman Absolution: I don't hear any voices in cutscenes. At first, I thought it was a rather questionable artistic decision, but then they'd have lengthy conversations and I realised it wasn't supposed to be like that.

Alright so it looks like you can't see it, neither can I on less bright screens. How about these photos? Graphical errors - Imgur

I can't see anything too bad in your images, but from your description I've seen this happen in pirate copies of games where the video quality in cutscenes is reduced and the audio is removed to keep the overall filesize down.

If you installed the games from the original retail DVDs, make sure your video codecs are up to date, and check the texture/detail options in the graphics control panel to see if any of the in-game graphics options are being over-ruled by Catalyst.

Also, check the speaker settings. If you're using stereo speakers and the game is setup to use 5.1, for example, the missing spoken parts might be going through a channel you don't have.

I can assure you that they are legitimate, bought from Steam.

I really don't get how you can't see it though when I can see it on other computers. Even the photos I took in the post above yours? Crazy!

All the settings are on ultra and it's not an in-game rendered cutscene anyway. How would I go about updating my codecs?

artifacting is when parts of the graphics go hay wire and you get these abnormal lines usually flinging across your screen , are you describing the large pixels instead?

Yes. I figured out the problem - my monitor, a benq Xl2420t, has a black equaliser that is designed to show enemies in video games even when they're in the shadows. The side effect of this is that it also makes compression artifacts much, much more noticeable. Not much I can do about it. Solved.

Glad you found the source of the problem , you can test it with another monitor if you have a spare to confirm it, please mark the thread as solved, thanks.
