I had a couple of questions.
Firstly, when you fill out a form to contact a webmaster and it asks for your email and then you hit send to get it to them, what do they see on their end? Do they see a display name for you, like when you send someone an email and it appears in their inbox with your name?

Also, can discussion forums track users with usernames back to their original names by looking at the user profiles they set up to post on the forums?

I have also noticed that many people have fake names as part of their email address. Is this generally advisable for anonymity or is it useless anyway so might as well use your name as part of your email address?

They can see everything. Some prefer a variation of their name, some prefer an anonymous moniker.

Yes, I think so.

Now, its just a case of waiting for someone who may be able to answer your query.

What do you mean everything? How do site administrators see IP addresses and does that reveal names? If you send a query through an email form (but not from your email account) what information do they have?

They see whatever you enter. And yes, they see an IP address, though those are rarely personally identifiable. At least not without court orders.

Personally, I never use my real name on the web on forums, emails, etc.. Exceptions are of course financial transactions, shopping, etc.

What do you all suggest I do to have greater anonymity on things like message boards regarding my email address?
