At the risk of sounding totally ignorant can you explain to me what the purpose is of an email client. What benefit is it, to an email user, over just using their email account in the conventional manner? Thanks.

OS: Windows10. In the past CP/M, DOS, Windows 95, 2000, 98SE, ME, Vista & Windows 7

My System

As a client user (TBird + OE depending on which Email and which computer), I like to have the Email on my computer, but also leave on server. Before retiring it was always Outlook.

Thanks for your replies, guys. But, sorry, I still don't get it. Surely, I am able to perform all the tasks that a client can do via my email account.

( I can see this ending up with me looking pretty stupid )

When you say "conventional manner" do you mean webmail (eg. Google's gmail) where the messages are stored on Google's servers rather than your own hard drive?
