Hotmail is an IMAP or POP type of Email account, it does not use Microsoft Exchange https://www.raymond.cc/blog/how-to-a...osoft-outlook/
Do you have a work Email you are trying to add from your works Microsoft Exchange account? https://blink.ucsd.edu/technology/em...-exchange.html

When I create new account I get message that all went well, that I must restart Outlook.
When Outlook restarts I get a dialog requiring that I enter the password for my microsoft account. The password does not seem to be accepted. I have verified separetely, that the password I enter is the correct password for my microsoft account. I then press cancel and get yhe following message: Connection to Microsoft exchange is unavailable. The next box that opens is from Microsoft Exchange: It stipulates the micosoft exchang:[email protected] and the mailbox name =SMTP.'MY hotmail userid'.
There is a button labeled 'Check name'. When I ppress it I again receive an enter password box for my microsoft account

Am I using he wrong method to create a new account?

On my old computer the account type for my hotmail account is Microsoft Exchange, this has been working since 2010.

Try to manually set up Hotmail in Outlook https://www.msoutlooktools.com/categ...look-2010.html

Red Faced

Problem solved. The version of micosoft office that I installed on my new laptop dated back to 2010. I ran software update for windows 10 and office 2010 was also updated. I then was able to create an account for hotmail in Outlook 2010.
By the way it is a microsoft exchange account that was created automatically.
Thank you for your suggestions.
