Three years ago we were benchmarking Microsoft's then latest operating system, Windows 8. At the time we were keen to make sure Windows 8 performed as well as Windows 7, which was a huge upgrade from 2006's Windows Vista.

In the end, we determined that Windows 8 was on par with 7 and at times a fraction faster, leading us to this conclusion in our performance review:

"Looking beyond benchmarks, Windows 8 appears more polished than Windows 7, even if you plan to live on the desktop and aren't too fond of the Start screen, general usage is smoother and appears to be faster on Windows 8, which I found most noticeable on our somewhat underpowered Athlon II X4 system. If anything, it's a great start. Now the Metro/Modern style will have to prove itself as a cross-platform OS that marries desktop, laptop and tablet PCs."

It's obvious now that the 'Metro' Start screen was an epic failure and in my opinion it was the only real issue with Windows 8, as I thoroughly enjoyed using the operating system with Classic Shell installed.

I loved 7, everything felt so... intergrated... 8.0 ruined all that for me, even though you could intergrate more things like Xbox and surface and all of that it never felt as easy or as organic as 7 was... I havn't done much with 10 yet, although I am a little peeved that you have to buy windows media center, (yes yes I know 10 as a whole was free)

My System

I only had a brief (very brief) encounter with Win-8, on Mrs WereBo's laptop, when it was new, it lasted less than an hour before upgrading to Win-7

I've found Win-10 to be slightly faster than the Win-7 install on my PC, plus it installed well with very few problems (just 1 online-chat to HP regarding my Scanjet 300 flatbed scanner, to fix a missing Registry entry) - All-in-all I'm well pleased with it, so much so I've now removed the 'Win-7 Restore' files to free up some drive space.

The missing Windows Media-Centre is a hassle, but there are free equivalents available, so far I've found ' AllMedia Server' to be good, despite some buttons written in Polish - It sends my video-clips etc. to my TV perfectly fine :smile)
