Western Digital to buy SanDisk in $19 billion deal

Hard-disk drive maker Western Digital Corp (WDC.O) said it would buy SanDisk Corp (SNDK.O) in a deal valued at about $19 billion to expand its business that makes flash memory storage chips used in smartphones and mobile devices.

Huh? WD is the largest mechanical drive manufacturer in the world. It's so important to the HDD industry that when its main plant flooded a few years ago the price of hard drives shot up tenfold.
