Hi,
I'm looking at a window 8.1 Sony PC , that has not been able to get an update for a year almost
140 Updates available - and they fail within 30seconds with an errorcode
800700C1

Looking into this Error I ran the SFC \scannow and it failed unable to repair files

I have attached the CBS (SR) log here

Any Advice welcom

As an update , i have now run
chkdsk /f
which fixed a few unallocated of free space
then a chkdsk /r
and it now has a problem

I get to 10% and it hangs for 1hr
so i restarted and same again
tried another reset - windows is trying to repair your PC and still hangs

So i have gone into advance settings and now trying a restore from Oct 2014 - which is the latest restore point
Infact that the last time the PC updated

So a little unhappy as its not my PC and i'm helping out a friend

i'll let you know how that all works out - maybe a factory reset will have to be done !!!!!

EDIT
The restore also failed - so trying an earlier point - which also failed

But looking on the web
its a common issue for chkdsk to stop at 10/11% and then run for hours and suddenly show 98% and complete -
Others have waited all night
so I will try that and its running now
stuck at 10% - the dots are revolving and the HDD light flashing - we wait and see until tomorrow

You're welcome! Do you think it could be a HDD dying. I like seagate for testing drives. How long has it been at 10%??
PS if you already know these things, just ignore. I'm thinking as long as you're getting failed sfc/ scannow errors, you won't be able to down load windows update. I would run the sfc scan at least 3 times before giving up on it! 14 Free Hard Drive Testing Tools (Updated October 2015)

Thanks
Yes i have seatools - but the Sony does not have a DVD drive - I should have a USB one - so hopefully can workout how to boot off that

Also unless chkdsk completes then its scheduled - so i need to stop that
Which I think i need to start in a command prompt and chkntfs /x c:
BUT not certain on that .........

The PC was purchased around 2012 - so maybe a harddrive starting to fail
Oh dear

Bummer not having DVD drive. You might be able to use a USB DVD drive. That's what I have. My drive will read but won't write. They are pretty cheap and it's nice to have one laying around for occasions like this, especially if you have friends that are always wanting you to fix things. lol

I have a USB one - so may need to try that out
Also I checked the SMART status on the HDD and it was OK
so not showing any error

I'm beginning to think - this is the windows 8 chkdsk MS issue - where it only shows 10/11% and then hours later jumps to 98/100% and completes

its a approx a 1TB drive so I guess with the /r flag will take a long while to run

OK I've never had chkdsk hang up on me. It does take a couple of hours to complete some times. I have a 500GB drive. Good luck. I would run sfc at least 2 more times.
Have you ran this. I don't have any experience with it. I don't remember every running it. Wouldn't hurt to give it a shot!

Windows corruption errors may prevent Windows updates and service packs from installing. For example, an update might not install if a system file is damaged. The DISM or System Update Readiness tool may help you to fix some Windows corruption errors.

Just a suggestion that has worked for me in the past:

From the administrator prompt, submit the following command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Don't forget to include the blanks.

Not to interfere with your suggestion, just want to add.
Also make sure you right click on cmd and run as administrator. You could also copy and paste the command. It doesn't work for me, but I don't get any errors!

Should have said I did that before the chkdsk
and it failed
see log below
Then I ran
chkdsk /f
and it fixed some issue on the disk - so i thought I would also check and repair badblocs
with
chkdsk /r

which after 90mins was still at 10%
so stopped that

and tried advanced options to do a restore - both restore points failed

then i read that chkdsk on windows 8 has an issue where it shows 10% and appears to hang
BUT then after a few hours - it will jump to 98/100% and complete

so its running again now - hope stopping it did not cause an issue

The Drive reports SMART as ALL OK

and heres the DISM result
and logs attached for
DISM and SfC

Here's one more suggestion! Then I'm out of here! lol!
Sorry I'm no good at reading logs.
IMHO stopping and restarting chkdsk will not cause a problem. If it's fixing bad sectors, no telling how long it will run however!

That's all I know to do. Perhaps someone else on the forum can help.

Good Luck

Thanks - my issue is getting out of the chkdsk loop
the PC is running chkdsk and until its completed it wont clear the dirtybit in the registry
so every time it starts it runs the
scanning and repairing Disk Drive

I will leave overnight and see what state its in, in the morning
hopefully not 10% !!!! still
then need to work out how to get it to boot without the scan

Thanks - I saw the reg edit - but not sure how I can get into the PC to do that - as its in a loop
Not sure if safemode will work
on windows 8 - hoping to see a boot to command prompt
but if i can get to command prompt then I saw this
chkntfs /x c:
which may save a reg edit
BUT not sure
guess i may have to find out in the morning (UK timezone here)

The HDD light is on - cant see it flickering
But really need to leave it alone now and wait - one of the harder things to do :) :)

Hi Wayne! I have never tried to stop a chkdsk. I'm afraid I'm not much help.
Good luck and never give up. Computers require a lot of patience some times.
I'm afraid I don't have a lot of patience some times.
Some times it's better to just walk away for awhile, but that's hard to do!
Maye you could remove the HDD and then reconnect it. Just a thought!
Good luck!
PS It would really be great if you could get into safe mode
