Hi, I was thinking of starting a side biz of repairing broken tablets and smartphones. I already have a few broken ones that i can try to repair that are my family's old devices. They are Android based.

I've never been a fan of Apple products therefore never own any including Iphones nor Ipads. I know this is a big disadvantage, but i figure I'd start with Android to begin.

Any books or suggestions of how to begin? I don't know of any type of certifications or classes for this area.

Living in NYC, there are a lot of tourists that break their phones & tablets while on vacation here and take them to rip off shops that charge a lot of $$$. I figure if I met them in a public place (like a crowded Hotel Lobby) to asses the problem then acquired the necessary hardware, if needed, I could come back and fix the problem, without needing a storefront and being able to charge a fair fee. I know this plan needs work but people on Craig's List seem to make a mint with on the site repair.

Thanks, for your advice

Also, to clarify: My primary job is just that a job I don't like but pays the bills for now. I'm looking for a something to do that I enjoy which will generate some side income as apposed to a hobby which costs money.

To make money from ANY business, you need to provide something people want and charge them a price they are willing to pay.

How to begin? Well, you can't provide a service unless you know how to provide that service. So if you want a business repairing tablets and smartphones, you need to learn how to repair tablets and smartphones.

There's a lot of risk in a business like the one you propose. Assuming someone is willing to wait on you to acquire replacement hardware, what do you plan to do if the hardware doesn't fix the problem? The customer's not going to want to pay for your mistake. You're either stuck with the cost or you'll have to pay to ship it back PLUS a restocking fee. Even if you do return the part and get a different one, the customer has to wait even longer... with no guarantee that you can fix the problem. And that's just one risk... what if you accidentally wipe the customer's data? Or somehow cause the problem to be worse? Or, even if you do nothing wrong, the customer blames you for stealing their account information?

I'm not saying that your plan is completely unworkable... but I don't want you to head blindly down a path without being aware of the potential risks.
