Hi All,

My degree is in Med & Pharm Sci and I currently work at a startup Biotech company in Cambridge. My role has progressed from Office Admin as we've grown to more of de-facto It support (title is now Operations Specialist), I'm admin for our Google Apps account and various other bits of software too. I teach myself webdev in my spare time as it's fun, however within the company my manager has said she would like me to have some formal training, as eventually we will have our own server on-site and the setup and admin of this will probably fall to me.

If I could turn back time I would have done a CS degree, however I'm now 25 with the regular adult obligations so going back to Uni isn't really an option. The University of Hertfordshire do online BSc and MS degrees (there's a non-CS degree route), or maybe I should do HND or similar? Or maybe start with compTIA A+ and go from there.

Any advice, help or (constructive) criticism is welcome!

Many thanks,

Nathan

I have a BSc in Chemistry. It hasn't hurt my IT career one bit.

That's encouraging to hear Michael, thank you! Out of interest, how did you start your career after studying chemistry?

After graduating in 1997, I had applied to dozens of labs, had gotten one interview, and zero job offers when I found out about an IT field service tech position from a former co-worker. He knew I was the unofficial go-to computer guy around the office, since I had been messing with computers since the early 80s, so he recommended me for the position. I got the job and advanced quickly.

I currently write technology training products for IT certification exams - a position that requires a degree. ;)
