My son is a senior in high school, and he has always been interested in technology. He is currently taking Java Programming II in high school for college credit at Robert Morris University. Although he has an A in the programming class, he is not interested in being a programmer. He is not yet sure what he wants to do with technology, but his passion lies in the technology field. He is comfortable doing anything technology-related, such as researching and modifying router settings to improve his Xbox experience as well as researching and utilizing Internet-published modifications to make an android-based device more useful.

He is currently considering local IT programs to save money by living at home instead of living at school. He is considering one IT program at Point Park University and two IT programs at Robert Morris University. Due to differing scholarship amounts awarded at the two schools, there is more than a $20,000 difference in cost between the schools over a four-year period. However, I am most concerned about which option is most likely to help him to get a good job in a technological field after graduation. Therefore, I am not disclosing which of the two schools would cost significantly more.

Could you please review the required courses that I have listed below and offer your personal opinion about which option is most likely to produce the best job options after college graduation?

OS: Windows 7, and I won't be upgrading to Windows 10!

My System

Those are three entirely different degrees, so step one is to figure out what your son wants to do. Knowing that he doesn't like programming is a good start.

If your son doesn't like programming, then Option 2 isn't going to help him any. Option 3 seems to be half programming, half systems design. Option 1 seems to be more geared towards IT Administration, so if that's what your son is interested in doing, that would seem to be the best option of the three. Plus, it offers an internship program, which will provide much-needed real-world experience (which is more valuable than the degree, in my opinion).

That said, a degree is NOT required to get started in IT administration. A degree will simply open up opportunities later in his career that would otherwise be unavailable to him, like senior or supervisory/management positions. There are certifications he can take which can help set him ahead of similarly experienced job seekers.
