So, I've got 3 years of help desk experience under my belt, now. I've received 3 certifications (ITIL, A+, and Net+).

To those who have many years of experience under their belts, is it safe for me to apply for higher positions other than help desk? If so, what type of position should I look for?

Edit: Will it be safe for me to start looking into tier 2/tier 3 positions?

Totally, do you have any networking experience? if so start applying for upper tier positions now, if not as your employer if you could get some exposure to networking and if your employer says he/she cannot pay you do it on a voluntary basis until you have the experience.

"Tier 2" and "Tier 3" mean different things in different companies. Some "Tier 3" techs do advanced help desk support... others do extremely complex IT work.

That said, the experience you have should enable you to move into a position where you are given more responsibilities (and, hopefully, a larger salary). If you're not being given those responsibilities where you are, it might be time to get a similar-level job, but one where you CAN get some additional responsibilities (such as doing light server administration, which is experience that can help you get a server administration job down the line).
