I've been experiencing some hanging/BSOD for the last week or so, first only upon closing the photo viewer, then closing a window, and now sometimes when I open a second window. Here's some of my info

OS - Windows 7
x64
What was original installed OS on system? Vista
OEM version
I assembled this system in the fall of 2009, I have not reinstalled the OS

Intel Core 2 Quad, Q8400 Yorkfield 2.66 GHz, 95 Watts
Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
Coolmax CU-700B 700W

I tried to get WinDbg running following the directions in one of the other posts, but I can't seem to manage. I'd like to learn more about how to diagnose problems, so that I don't feel so helpless in the future.

Included in the zip file are the last three dmp files.

Thanks for your input!

Hi -

The 3 BSODs had bugcheck = 0x116 = video TDR timeout

Probable cause listed as NVIDIA video -
Code:
nvlddmkm.sys Fri Jan 18 08:22:15 2013 (50F94C87)
Check for NVIDIA driver update - http://www.sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=nvlddmkm.sys

1 of the 3 dumps listed Unknown_Image as the probable cause. Usually when Unknown_Image is seen (a driver name should be listed), either the dump file was corrupted or the possibility of hardware failure exists.

Lastly, you listed as part of your system specs -
Code:
 Intel Core 2 Quad, Q8400 Yorkfield 2.66 GHz, 95 Watts
Is this a laptop? If not, a 95w PSU is very low. Please check the wattage on the PSU label (if not a laptop).

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Thanks for your response. I'm downloading the new Nvidia driver right now.

I just completed two iterations of the memtest86, with no errors found.

95W was not the PSU, but rather the wattage listed on the CPU.

What is the wattage of the PSU? Make, model & rated power output. Also it might be helpful to post the voltages being produced by the PSU, as reported in BIOS.

Also, run checkdisk. Causes of data corruption include: Heat, bad power, hard drive errors.

I updated the drivers from Nvidia. It hasn't helped. While the cause of the BSOD is coming from the graphics card, i feel like the problem manifests itself before. Its always the same, first the computer hangs for a few minutes, the screen flicker a couple of times,then goes black, and the the system restarts.

I attempted to run a disk check, but when i go to restart, the computer hangs, like I described above.

For those that keep asking about my PSU, please look at my first post. I put all the info i have about my PSU on the fourth line. If there is anything else i can tell you, please letme know, and I'll try to figure it out.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Failure to successfully complete a check disk means something. Bad HD is on the list of possible causes. Download and burn an .ISO of the diagnostic utilities for your HD's manufacturer. (They all have them. SeaTools, or whatever.) This utilities opinion will be the "final word" on whether or not the HD is good.

If the CD (or any optical media) will not boot, that says something else. It says bad hardware, somewhere.

Bad Power is still on the list. Your PSU is low-end and is not 80+ certified, so the voltages as reported in BIOS are more important now.

Might be worthwhile testing the RAM with memtest86. Check each stick one at a time.

I did not check each stick individually, but I did run memtest86 through two complete cycles with no errors.

Hi -

Memtest86+ needs to run 1 stick at a time & alternate the slots.

One other item - I missed an exception code found in the 0x116 bugcheck dump -

0xc000009a = STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES -- this often refers to virtual memory, but according to Windows Management Instrumentation, your virtual memory usage = 0
Code:
AllocatedBaseSize=8190
Caption=C:\pagefile.sys
CurrentUsage=0
Description=C:\pagefile.sys
InstallDate=20090921092457.436927-240
Name=C:\pagefile.sys
PeakUsage=0
Status=
TempPageFile=FALSE
Not sure what system resource is being overtaxed at this time.

Regards. . .

When you say alternate slots, do you mean check each stick in the slot it was in? Sorry if that is a dumb question.

What values should I look for? Unfortunately I don't know what is normal and what is not.

Meaning that you use the test to check both the memory and the slot. If the stick is bad in slot #1, try it in slot#2, because sometimes the memory is good, but the slot is bad.

The BIOS should display a list of voltages, such as vcore, 12 & 5 volt rails, etc...

I ran memtest86+ on all my RAM, I checked the first two slots with each stick of RAM. I didn't come across any errors.

Here is the only voltage looking info I was able to find in the bios. I really don't know what to do to get to the the bottom of the issue.

The "DDR18V" is shown as 2.08 volts. A typical number for memory voltage is 1.8 volts, and .2 volts is about 20% and out of spec. Unless the PSU is delivering 2 volts because that is what the memory requires. Check the RAM and confirm that the voltage should be the standard 1.8 volts and that the PSU is sending bad voltage to the RAM.

Generally, increasing voltage increases RAM stability, but generates additional heat. So the heat could be the problem. But even if it's not, spec should be 1.8 volts, so .2 is out of spec which makes the PSU bad. Given that I've already put a cloud on it due to the fact that it's not 80+ certified, this places it higher on the list of suspects, but there's nothing definite yet. I'd like an opinion from an experienced hardware tech before condemning the PSU, which is not the same thing as declaring it the cause of the problems. There could still be a different cause, and the bad PSU could be coincidental.

The 0.238 volts too high on the 12 volt rail is noteworthy, but not out of spec, but fits the general pattern of a PSU that is delivering too much voltage. Which is unusual. Most of the time the voltage is too low. I've never seen too-high voltage before, so there may be some additional conversation on this issue needed.

One thing you could try is downloading and installing Prime95 and run the memory-intensive tests and see if it makes your system crash. Maybe there is a temperature sensor on the RAM, and a utility to measure it, that you could run simultaneously and see how hot it gets. IDK. Too-hot memory is something I've only read about on overclockers.net forum, as they are increasing voltage on purpose beyond factory spec to stabilize RAM that is also running faster than factory spec. I also know that overheated components generally cause general bugginess on a system. Odd, hard-to-define problems that have no pattern, which is what this situation feels like to me at this point.

Also, in the BIOS, you ought to have both the CPU temperature warning enabled, as well as the CPU fan fail warning enabled.

The fact that they are disabled makes me fidgety, as I've never seen them come from the factory in this condition. Someone has been messing with them, and in a bad way too as I can see no reason to disable these settings and a whole lot of reasons to have them enabled.

OP did you do this? If not, did the system come to you used? Have you let someone else mess with it? Has someone been playing with the BIOS settings, say in order to overclock it? (This might explain why someone has disabled the temperature warning system.)

Permanent damage may result, both to the hardware and the software, and it could cause symptoms just like the ones you are experiencing.
