OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Hi,

I've been experiencing random BSOD's over the last month or two. They started after I installed my new video card. The video drivers are up to date, to cover the most obvious solution. The BSOD's don't seem to happen at any particular moment or during stress on the system; they are relatively random. Sometimes I'll go a week without one, then get 2-5 in a day. I've tried to analyze the BSOD screens using BlueScreenView software, but the files at fault vary with each BSOD. Common files associated with my BSOD's are nvlddmkm.sys, dxgkrnl.sys, win32k.sys, and dxgmms1.sys. From what I've read, this behavior could be attributed to faulty memory. I attached the requested reports and information. I would greatly appreciate any insight or help with this issue; it's been greatly annoying as of late.

╖ OS - Windows 7
64 bit
╖ What was original installed OS on system? Windows Vista
╖ Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? It's a full retail version of Windows 7 that I purchased.
╖ Age of system (hardware) The original system was built approximately 3 years ago, but the video card and hard drive were recently upgraded within the past 1-2 months.
╖ Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? The OS was re-installed about a month ago when the HD was upgraded.

╖ CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz
╖ Video Card - NVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti
╖ MotherBoard - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
╖ Power Supply - brand & wattage - Unknown at the moment, but will update and/or provide if needed.

╖ System Manufacturer - Custom-built computer.
╖ Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) - N/A

Thanks,

- Aaron

Recommendations:
You are also missing quite a few Windows updates, including Service Pack 1.

Update to Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [August 2011]

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [August 2011]

Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center

Service Pack 1 Download site

Outdated BIOS:

Your BIOS is also pre-Windows 7 from 2007. Update to the latest version.

WARNING
  • A BIOS update must be done carefully and should be performed outside of Windows if you cannot run Windows without crashing. Failure to properly update the BIOS can lead to the system being unable to boot.
GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 2.0)

Display Card Related Crashes:
Your crashes are DirectX/graphics card related. DirectX comes installed with Windows, so this may indicate Windows corruption. It may also be that you have corrupted drivers or a graphics card hardware problem.
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run a system file check to check Windows for corruption:
    1. Click Start Menu
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Accessories
    4. Right click Command Prompt
    5. Click Run as administrator
    6. Type
      Code:
      sfc /scannow
      and press Enter
    7. Once it is complete, make note of the message. If it says Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and post back
    8. If the message does not say Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and do steps 1-6 again.
    9. You may need to do steps 1-6 up to three times with a restart in between each run to resolve all corrupted files.
    10. If you still have corrupted files after a fourth run, post back here with the following:
      1. Click Start Menu
      2. Click Computer
      3. Open your C: drive
      4. Open Windows
      5. Open Logs
      6. Open CBS
      7. Copy and paste CBS.log or CBS (it may not have the log extension) to a location you will remember.
      8. Compress (zip) the CBS file and attach the .zip file to your next post.

Follow the steps for Diagnosing basic problems with DirectX. To re-install your display card drivers as outlined in the DirectX link, use the following steps.
  1. Download the drivers you want for your display card(s)
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Uninstall a program
  5. For NVIDIA:
    • Uninstall the NVIDIA Graphics Driver (this should uninstall all NVIDIA software and drivers)
    • Restart your computer
    • Make sure NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver, NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player, NVIDIA HD Audio Driver, and NVIDIA PhysX System Software are not still listed under Uninstall a program through Control Panel
    • If any remain of the above, uninstall one at a time
    • If asked to restart after uninstalling any of the above, do so, and continue uninstalling any remaining NVIDIA items until all are removed
  6. Restart your computer after uninstalling drivers for all display cards
  7. Install the driver you selected for the display cards once Windows starts

Remember to try multiple versions of the graphics drivers, download them fresh, and install the freshly downloaded drivers.

Outdated and Problematic Drivers:
You should update/replace/remove the following drivers. Any drivers that are known to cause BSODs, please remove the software or remove the drivers and then remove the device; steps to do so are given after the list of outdated drivers. If you have ASACPI.sys installed, make sure it is updated and not pre-2009; pre-2009 versions are known to cause BSODs:
Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 02:04:13 2009 (49A65B0D)
Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
https://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=Rt64win7.sys

amdxata.sys Tue May 19 11:56:59 2009 (4A12F2EB)
AMD storage controller driver - usually from the Windows 7 DVD
https://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=amdxata.sys

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.
Uninstall or change a program

Open Device Manager

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Hey writhziden,

I greatly appreciate your help.

-I updated to Service Pack 1, updated my network card driver, and ran a system file check. The file check reported Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations after the first run.

-I tried to update my BIOS, but both versions that I downloaded wouldn't run. My motherboard is revision 1, but I tried both. The error was: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher." There was only 1 choice for these BIOS drivers, though.

-Should I attempt to update the chipset driver for the motherboard as well or instead?

-The amdxata.sys driver is from Windows Update. I downloaded all available important updates.

-After these changes, I've noticed a decrease in BSOD frequency. I've had 2 new ones and the files associated with the crash are different from previous BSOD's. I've attached a new zip of BSOD dumps as well as an updated performance monitor report.

-I downloaded and burned memtestx86+, but I haven't had the opportunity to run it at length. Let me know if it's even relevant at this point, though.

Thanks again for all of your help, it's sincerely appreciated.

- Aaron

My System

Your BIOS must be updated outside Windows using the Gigabyte boot utilities provided by your motherboard manufacturer. Contact Gigabyte support or check their forums for support.

Nice work with the driver updating! :-}

avast! was involved in your latest crashes. Remove it and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials to see if the system is more stable.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

If you still crash with Microsoft Security Essentials, your focus should be on the BIOS update. If the BIOS update also does not provide more stability, start testing hardware starting with the Memtest86+ diagnostics outlined previously.
