Question

Hi.
Please help me understanding what is causing my current BSOD(s)!

I have given up myself after some weeks of on/off analyses and tries of repairs – after reading forum posts (a very lot on this issue exists!).

I cannot decode dumps so hopefully someone here can interpret the data attached to something useful and point out the cure for my problem.

Bottom line of my somewhat long story below is that I cannot get rid of the 116 stop code – which means that I cannot utilize my ATI Radeon HD 4800 video card device anymore.

Currently if I want to use my pc, my video card device must be Standard VGA!

Please don’t hesitate asking for any clarification.

Thanks in advance.

……………………………………………………..

Background:

On my Dell XPS430 since 2009 I have had a combination of (OEM) Windows Vista Home 32bit + ATI Radeon HD 4800 running with the AMD Catalyst driver - without getting noticeable BSODs if any at all.

Be aware that my OS is an international i.e. Danish version.

On 25 February 2015 I upgraded my Windows Vista Home 32bit to Windows 7 Home 32bit (retail upgrade DVD). It’s now Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (Danish).

Microsoft’s upgrade tool had advised to uninstall these 2 applications from my pc before upgrading: iTunes and AMD Catalyst Control Center. I did this using Control Panel/Remove Programs.

I completed the upgrade with a lot of Windows Updates plus re-installing the AMD Catalyst Control Center.

For this I used the AMD Driver Autodetect Utility from AMD’s driver site – and it pointed out this version “13-9-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whql” for my specific OS/video card combination.

With the AMD Catalyst Install Manager I got the display driver and CCC installed (Express mode, not Custom) without problems.

Symptoms:

Shortly after my finishing of the upgrade the screen gets covered with squared coloured dots and some vertical coloured bands.

A couple of automatic video driver stops/restarts/error messages follow shortly and lastly the “final” stop code 116 BSOD is thrown.

The last 3 minidumps with code 116 available:

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116) - Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.
Probably caused by: atikmpag.sys

The root cause?

The file “atikmpag.sys” is mentioned as the probable cause why I must have a defective video card driver installation. Hence was my focus below on removing this driver and re-installing it.

Do the dumps confirm that atikmpag.sys IS the cause?
Is this file corrupt? Can it be replaced?
What should I do please to learn more – or ultimately to repair the root cause?

What I have done so far:

-I have not added or removed any devices compared to before the OS upgrade.

-In Safe Mode I do not experience this graphic noise/BSOD.

-From within Device Manager having “manually updated” my video card driver to “Standard VGA” running with this in Normal Mode does not cause the graphic noise/BSOD either.

-The weeks after the upgrade I studied relevant forum posts - and I tried a handful of different combinations of removing the AMD Catalyst driver followed by a video driver install.

But all tries (below) ended up unsuccessful; I cannot create a working video card driver installation since the BSOD stop code 116 comes after every reboot/start into Normal Mode.

-I do not remember the exact sequence of my tries/actions any more, here’s a list.

Remove/uninstall:
· Control Panel/Remove Programs/Change “AMD Catalyst Install Manager” gives the options “Uninstall” and “Express Uninstall”. I have used both. My chipset is Intel so “Express…” – which removes all AMD software/drivers – should make no unneeded harm.

· I have run this tool “Display Driver Uninstaller version 14.1.0.0” from Guru3D.com. I ran it in Safe Mode as advised. ( https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html)

· I have made a detailed manual cleansing by following a guide by Tom’s Hardware: “How to Completely Uninstall all AMD/Nvidia GPU Drivers. ( https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2284749/completely-uninstall-amd-nvidia-gpu-drivers.html)

· At some point I also restored the oldest restore point I had after the upgrade.

The install
of AMD Catalyst have I been doing in different ways too:

· Using the AMD Catalyst Install Manager.

· From within Device Manager having updated the ATI Radeon HD 4800 driver by “automatic search”.

· Windows Update which automatically reported an “Important” driver update for ATI Radeon HD 4800.

Notice:
· I have done the necessary reboots during the remove/install phases above.
· I have made some CCleaner cleansing now and then in between – and have unfortunately also cleared the dump history (which I should not of regard to your potential analyses).
· I have had the computer cabinet opened for cleaning the fans for dust (canned air) because one forum thread implicated overheating as the root cause for the BSOD.
· I have now disabled automatic Windows Updates in order to have the control myself during these weeks of despair (else my current “Standard VGA” mode would change and BSODs would show).
· I trust that I have identified and downloaded the correct video driver version pointed out by AMD’s autodetection tool.
· I cannot find the next newest version of AMD Catalyst driver on AMD’s site which might be a reasonable try I thought.

My System

I haven't looked at the dumps.
I will suggest updating to a later driver such as the Omega driver or even the 15.3 Beta driver, which I am currently using on three of my systems without error.
Auto install also suggested a different driver for my computers, they do not necessarily select the best.
Updating will overwrite the existing driver, there is no need to remove drivers first.
It is also possible that the Graphics card is now faulty and is the cause of the BSODS, not the drivers.
try it in another computer if possible, or borrow an AMD card to try with your existing drivers.

Did you also have x117/x116 errors in Vista before upgrading to Win7?

No, with the same video card in Vista I never experienced that kind of errors. No BSODs and no video card stop/start/timeout error messages as long time I can remember back.

Tnx, I'll try updating the driver to "a later" one - and get back.

In fact I did not think that every driver version would be compatible with my OS/VC combination, hence my trust in the autodetect tool :-)

Hmm, I have downloaded the newest version of the driver from AMD's site: “AMD-Catalyst-Omega-14.12-With-DOTNet45-Win7-32bit” - and the Beta too: “AMD-Catalyst-15.3Beta-32Bit-Win7-Mar20”.
I ran the installation with the "Catalyst Install Manager" supplied in each package.
In the first case it said that except for the audio driver the rest already was updated! In the second case it said that all components were already updated.

I decided to clear all AMD/ATI stuff again using the DDU tool (DisplayDriverUninstaller_14.100 from guru3d.com) in Safe Mode - (have done this many times during the last weeks).

After the reboot it started an automatic driver update to this old version: “ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series WDDM 1.1” (i.e. digitally signed by MS) version 8.56.1.16 of 15. April 2009.

I had disabled automatic Windows Update so this one was apparently not removed from my pc by DDU – maybe it is identified as a Microsoft “thing”?

Until now (only a few hours later) I have not seen any BSOD - which normally would start almost immediately after driver update/reboot.

If this is steady I think I can accept staying on this very old driver version; I do not need any “fancy” 3D/game facilities or so.

I will wait a few days before I mark the thread closed.

Sometimes the older video drivers are more stable then the latest and greatest drivers.

Well, my latest reported state above was not a steady one !

I'm back to constantly getting graphic noise i.e. colored bands and dots all over and occasional BSODs (code 116/117).

I’ll try remove the ATI video card and replace it with a Nvidia.
