It's been awhile since I posted with a problem. The blue screen problem I had before has vanished since I reinstalled Windows 7. However a new problem has surfaced since I moved back into my dorm room.

Problem: Computer's audio and graphics lags due to high CPU usage. I noticed svchost.exe is the culprit, but I do not know the cause. I have attached an image of what is going on with that. This has become a real nuisance and has also caused keyboard and mouse lag recently.

Here are my current computer specifications:
OS: Windows 7 Professional x64
Memory: 6GB Corsair Dominator DDR2
Sound Card: Creative X-fi Titanium Fatal1ty
Video Card: Nvidia Geforce 460

If you want me to include anything else, please let me know.

Hi,

Please follow the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Tech Support Forum. They give us system information that is helpful in troubleshooting freezes too.

Also save this program to the desktop - https://live.sysinternals.com/procexp.exe

Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. Go to File -> Save and save the text file. Then attach it alongside the zipped folder.

Regards,
Reventon

Adding another picture. As you can see, most internet based service hosts seem to be using a ton of CPU. It seems to be happening more often, or I am just getting crazy.

Hi,

As you just said; the services that are using the most appear to be networking related.

I see you are currently using the D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCIe Desktop Adapter to connect. It's driver could do with an update:
Code:
Driver	c:\windows\system32\drivers\athrx.sys (8.0.0.238, 1.47 MB (1,542,656 bytes), 10/5/2009 5:34 PM)
You can find the update here - ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dwa556/...rivers_140.zip

If that fails to fix it, please remove the wireless card and use wired networking for a day or so. Hopefully that will show if the wireless card is the problem here.

I'll try that. We cannot use wireless networking. My college has switched to wireless only sadly. They said Ethernet had too high of an upkeep cost (which I am doubting being a CS major and all and their inability to provide an adequate number of access points to us).

Ok. Updated drivers. Still having the same problem.

I am watching it as it happens. I notice even when I am not actively doing anything (almost tempted to run Wireshark to possibly get a packet level view of what is happening), the problem seems to be happening about once a minute. I counted almost a minute in between each time it happened.

Set up Wireshark + TCP View and see if you can spot anything.

I'll download the stuff for that. I'll see if anything weird is happening to packets or not.

I am mostly out of good ideas at this point. I've asked a few other CS majors around me and they have no idea either now.

What other programs might be able to figure out this issue?

Wireshark nor tcpview showed anything too weird. I noticed that I captured a lot of packets that weren't sent to or from me though. I didn't even know my card supported promiscuous mode...it never seemed to before.

In tcpview, I noticed whenever lag happened, a few svchost processes showed as red. No idea what that meant though.

I disabled my wireless card for a bit and the lag disappeared. When I re-enabled, it was back again. Whenever I disable it though, the computer really lags for about 20-30 seconds before it goes through and stops lagging.

Any ideas? Could the way the network is set up at the dorms (multiple access points of varying power) be freaking out my card?

At this point it does look like the card is the issue.

I would still like you to try out the wired connection (perhaps at a friends house?) and see if it has similar problems.

Or, see if the wireless card acts up with a different (non-university) access point.

Ok. I bought a new USB Wireless adapter.
I am still having the exact same problem.

Now I have no idea...

Do you have the same problems at a non-university wireless access point?

I can't exactly bring my desktop to one of those at the moment. I'll have to test that.

I ran driver verifier and got some weird result. I wasn't even testing any microsoft drivers, yet hidclass.sys faulted.

Logitech G15 Keyboard

Both worked fine in my previous installation of windows (you can see the topic about that here: https://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ds-520855.html)

I also just noticed something. It happens a lot when I am connecting or disconnecting from a network with the new card or the old one. It also happens the moment I am disabling a network interface as well.

With problems under your previous install of Windows such as those, it makes me wonder if the motherboard does have a fault. Testing using ethernet would be good, to see if wired networking has similar problems on that motherboard.

I brought my desktop to my house today (thanks to my parents picking me up to do this type of test). Ethernet does not have this problem, which really confuses me more now.

Let me just check - you have no software (such as wireless "autoconfig" utilities) that could be interfering with wireless devices? I don't recall seeing any when I looked at your report but I am not infalliable.
