So my computer has been restarting itself randomly (but more frequently when watching full screen youtube videos). I found out that the restart was really just Windows XP's way of doing BSOD.

I'm not quite sure how to post BSOD info, but this is what I've found using Blue Screen Viewer.

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED ntoskrnl.exe
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Ntfs.sys
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA win32k.sys
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP intelppm.sys
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER USBPORT.SYS
BAD_POOL_HEADER+Npfs.SYS

System Specs:
Machine name: H-09374D5F05DC4

Please generate the following reports, then zip them up and upload them with your next post:
- perfmon (save as .html)
- msinfo32 (save as .nfo)
- system and application logfiles (save as .txt)
- systeminfo (save as .txt) - it may not work in XP, but I have a workaround
- dxdiag (save as .txt)

If you don't know how to do this, post back and I'll work up a set of instructions. I don't have a copy of XP handy, so I can't do it now.

More to follow when the 23 memory dumps are finished running.......

The BSOD error codes seem to indicate a hardware issue (8 different codes out of 23 memory dumps - 11 different causes blamed out of 23 memory dumps). With XP this is generally more definitive than it is with Vista/Win7. That means that XP is less likely to spit out these errors due to compatibility issues. It still is possible that these errors can be attributed to lower level drivers or malware.

The first thing to do with XP memory dumps is to update ALL of your drivers. This is because we can't identify outdated drivers by date since XP files can be very old. It's best to update them from the device manufacturer's website - but if you can't figure that out, then update from the PC Manufacturer's website. DO NOT update from Windows Update or from the Update Driver function in Device Manager.

Then visit Windows Update and get all updates that are available. Don't worry about the drivers - but do note if any are offered (that means that you don't have the most updated version). We'll deal with that if other things don't fix the error(s).

Meanwhile, start with these free diagnostics:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)

My computer is definitely restarting more frequently than yesterday. Sometimes it restarts while the computer is booting which hasn't happened until this morning.

I booted it up in safe mode with network and it doesn't seem to crash or freeze.

I think I will have to do all the driver updating, reporting and H/W Diagnostic in Safe Mode (w/ Network). Is that okay?

Start with the Hardware diags - memtest86+ & HDD, per usasma's instructions.

You burn the ISO to CD, then boot from CD.

They are DOS based; Windows will not load.

The hardware diagnostics can all be done from bootable disks - so Windows isn't needed for them.

If you don't have any problems in Safe Mode, then that's the key to this problem.
The key here is that it doesn't happen in Safe Mode, but does in normal mode.

So, here's a couple of articles that describe clean boot troubleshooting (which will help with isolating the problem driver/startup/service):
Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Try updating stuff in Safe Mode - but don't expect them all to work (it has to do with the Windows Installer Service not working in Safe Mode).

- systeminfo (save as .txt) - it may not work in XP, but I have a workaround
- dxdiag (save as .txt)

If you don't know how to do this, post back and I'll work up a set of instructions. I don't have a copy of XP handy, so I can't do it now.

More to follow when the 23 memory dumps are finished running.......
could you give me the instructions?

I've tried the clean startup and the online scan you recommended but the computer still auto restarts and the online scan doesn't show any infection.

I will try the h/w diagnostic as soon as I can get a blank CD

Hi -

Download these 2 files; save both to My Documents -
1. Microsoft SysInternals AutoRuns - https://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe
2. System file collection app - http://sysnative.com/0x8/BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe

Go to My Docs and run #2. It will run #1.

Output = newly created folder in My Docs - TSF_XP_Support

Zip up the entire folder and attach to next post.

Also -
- Run Speccy - Download Speccy 1.11.256 - FileHippo.com
- "File" | "Publish Snapshot" | Paste URL into your next post

- Run - https://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ml#post3191462

- Get blank CDs for h/w diag tests

Regards. . .

Sorry for the long reply..

Apparently it's a hardware problem. I unplugged the graphics card, the hard drive and the CD drive from the motherboard and the computer just gets stuck on that screen you get when you start up your computer.

What does that mean?

You must have a HDD plugged in to start the system.
