Hi -

There was only 1 dump between the 2 zips.

The lone dump named Microsoft USB hub driver as probable cause.

What is plugged in USB ports?

Driver Verifier will help find a rogue 3rd party driver, assuming one exists.

Run Driver Verifier - Driver Verifier - Windows 7 & Vista (BSOD-related)

Driver Verifier needs to run 24 hours minimum or until it BSODs your system, whichever is less. Then rerun the jcgriff2 BSOD app -

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 & Vista

Also, run Speccy - Download Speccy 1.12.265 - FileHippo.com
- "File" | "Publish Snapshot" | Paste URL into your next post

Regards. . .

One USB hub has the Dynex wireless optical mouse (this one is connected to the laptop all the time but was bought in April '11. The timing kind of matches when I started seeing BSODs. Will try to replace it. The other one is magic jack (sometimes it is recognized by laptop & some other times it gives an error message. I bought a "DriverUpdate" software last week that has updated all drivers. But I have seen 2-3 BSODs during the week.

Will replace the optical wireless mouse & see if that makes a difference.

Will also run Driver Verifer & post findings.

Thanks for your time & efforts.

- Dan

The lone dump named Microsoft USB hub driver as probable cause.

What is plugged in USB ports?

Driver Verifier will help find a rogue 3rd party driver, assuming one exists.

Run Driver Verifier - Driver Verifier - Windows 7 & Vista (BSOD-related)

Driver Verifier needs to run 24 hours minimum or until it BSODs your system, whichever is less. Then rerun the jcgriff2 BSOD app -

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 & Vista

Also, run Speccy - Download Speccy 1.12.265 - FileHippo.com

Hi Dan. . .

My pleasure to try and help.

I found a PDF manual for the Dynex wireless optical mouse - https://www.dynexproducts.com/cms/doc...h_Final_lr.pdf

It does mention a driver CD came with it. Did you install the drivers from the CD?

Dynex driver updates - https://www.dynexproducts.com/product.../DX-WLMSE.html

Dynex "Drivers, Firmware and Software" zip file - https://www.dynexproducts.com/cms/fil...E%20Driver.zip

I downloaded the zip driver file. The manual does list Windows 7, but the latest drivers are old Vista SP0 - May 2007. Can the mouse be used as true PnP w/o 3rd party drivers installed? I have a USB KB here that came w/ 3rd party drivers, but I never installed them. I just plugged the KB in and Windows 7 installed MS legacy drivers. KB works fine.

I can't help but wonder if the USB hub itself is involved. Do you have enough USB ports to do without the hub (to test - see if BSODs continue)?

Same with Magic Jack. Where did you get the drivers from? Does the system BSOD if MJ not plugged in?

As for dates of crashes, the Reliability Monitor may be of help to you -
START | type perfmon /rel

Norton is on my hit list too. I sometimes find the cause of 0x9f (0x3,,,) BSODs to be networking related. If the wifi + Ethernet drivers are current (both drivers usually load into RAM, even though only 1 device is actually in use), I look for a 3rd party firewall. See if NIS/ N360 removal helps calm BSOD epidemic. You can always reinstall it if you wish.

Norton Removal - https://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146

Hi jcgriff2:

When you went on to look for drivers for a mouse, you certainly went beyond your call of duty! Hats off to you. This is especially appealing to me since I try to do the same w/ my clients where the focus is on helping solve their issue not whether it was just my area of control to help resolve issues in or not!

I did take a look at that mouse. It is for model Model: DX-WLMSE while my model happens to be DX-PWLMSE. Either way, both claim:
  • Supports Windows 2000, XP and Vista
  • Windows 7 compatible for flexible use
That is not the same as supporting Windows 7. I will certainly get another one today. I have also removed MagicJack but doubt that will make a difference since I have been using MJ for last 2 years on the same laptop w/o BSODs in the past.

I am also already running Driver Verifier & will continue to do so for at least 24 hrs as recommended.

I have other USB ports as well that I will try to switch to later once I eliminate mouse as a potential issue.

I will post an update in the next 2 days.

Thanks again,

- Dan

Thank you, Dan. It's refreshing to hear you do the same.

Drivers can be hard to find, especially when searches bring up those pop-up filled sites that lead you to a page with quick fixes and want your CC number!

You may find this helpful in the future for drivers -
- Driver Reference Table - MVP
- Driver Reference Table - MVP - BETA

It grows daily and is completely free.

There is one Dynex driver listed - https://sysnative.com/0x1/DriverReference.html#bcmusbdhdlh64.sys

You're right - that info does not mean it is Windows 7 certified.

I happened to find model DX-PWLMSE at the Windows 7 Compatibility Center - listed as NOT compatible -

Glad to hear no prior problems with MJ.

Driver Verifier sounds like a plan. You may experience system slowness as D/V will run in the background and does utilize system resources.

Regards. . .

Thumbs Up

I have replaced the Dynex wireless optical mouse with one from Microsoft itself and have not had any BSODs in the last 4 days. So long BSODs ...

Amazing that a $15 mouse made me loose 3-4 weekends of my precious time.

Thank you so much for your time. My learnings for others are these:
  1. Download "BlueScreenView" software from Download.com. It's free.
  2. Same with "SlimDrivers Free". Get it from Download.com. It's free & the only one I could fint that updates your drivers. Other software are teasers that tell you which drivers are not up to date but do not help update any drivers. They also have a paid version that supposedly updates ALL drivers automatically while the free one requires you to click through several screens. I bout the padi version but am not sure it is worth it since after a one time effort, most drivers are not updated too often.
  3. Follow posting instructions in the sticky notes of this forum.
  4. Follow the instructions & submit your zip files.
  5. These guys are great at helping out.
  6. Most importantly, PAY IT FORWARD in other arenas of your life since you would easily save a lot of your time (by following these instructions) and more than $200 for similar services from some geek squad (without guaranteed results). I would have happily helped an elderly or disabled person for the time I wasted on resolving this issue.
Thanks again to jcgriff2 for fantastic & prompt service s/he offers!

If you have additional learnings than these, do update this thread for others to benefit from.

- Dan
