OS: Windows 8 Pro x64 and Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1
Age of System: Almost 5 years (GPU and PSU are 2 years old)
Age of OS Installation: A couple of days
CPU: Intel Q9300
GPU: Gainward Nvidia GTX 460 GS-GLH
RAM: Corsair Dominator 2x2GB 1066
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula
HD: SAMSUNG HD501LJ 500gb x2 (RAID)
Power supply: Corsair AX750 Gold
System Manufacturer: Self made

Greetings, I'm suffering several BSOD during gaming sessions (error=0x00000124) and I still can't figure out what's the problem, although is almost sure that it's hardware related (there are no overclocks on the system).
The first BSOD happened on the last days of December while playing Kingdoms of Amalur (i was running win8) it was a strange BSOD because I played 12 hours without problems, but after that point my system crashed randomly while playing.

I tried to solve these BSOD by reinstalling the game, by updating drivers and by unistalling some programs like Daemon Tools / MSI Afterburner that it's known they can cause troubles.
I updated BIOS aswell.
I checked temperatures during gameplay but there was nothing strange in them.
I tried to play again and for an hour it worked but then BSOD happened again.

After this I did some hardware diagnostics: MEMTEST outside windows, it did 7 passes in 6 hours with 0 errors. I runned SeaTools for HardDrives without problems and I did also a CHKDSK / Defrag from windows. No problems found and I dediced to do a format and try with my old Windows 7 PRO.

Carefully I updated again all drivers and tried to play. I played fine (different games) for 3 days until today. After 16 hours of gaming with Torchlight II the system crashed again with the same BSOD (2 times).

At this point I think these BSOD happen only while playing and only when a save file grows in size, of course this is my personal idea and it maybe wrong
I hope you can clarify this situation... thanks for your work

Recommendations:
Crashes point to your hard disk filesystem manager. Replace avira with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). 3rd party antivirus programs can sometimes wreak havoc on RAID systems. Make sure to run the avira registry cleaning utility to remove all remnants of avira from the registry.

Quote:
NOTE:
  • I do not recommend using registry cleaners for optimization; stay away from registry cleaning tools that do automated registry cleaning of the whole system. I only recommend the avira cleaner since it is recommended by avira's developer.
Download Avira RegistryCleaner | Official Website

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

If replacing avira with MSE does not help: Crashes may be due to RAID itself; RAID was designed with servers in mind and not for the home user. It often causes more problems than it is worth.
Why RAID is (usually) a Terrible Idea

Backup your important data. Then try installing Windows to only one drive in AHCI SATA mode (you can change the setting in the BIOS). See if the system is stable that way. If it is stable in AHCI, you can decide if you want to tackle a RAID array again.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

First of all thanks for your answer... I've replaced Avira with MSE but another BSOD happened today (after several hours of no problems) so I'm looking at the other option of switching from RAID to AHCI (although I used RAID0 since I made this system and never had problems...).
I tried to change it from bios but after reboot it says "Missing Operating System"...I looked up on the internet for a solution and I've used this fix: Error message occurs after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive , however nothing changed.

I have few questions at this point...
1) Is necessary to reinstall Windows? And before doing that do I have to set AHCI SATA from bios?
2) Could I leave my system with the current partitions (2) or I have to reset that too?

Thanks again

Glad to help. :-}

It would probably be best to backup the partition data or the partition layout to a backup image and then re-install Windows fresh. Yes, you will need to change the BIOS SATA setting to AHCI prior to re-installing Windows.

Hello again :)

After more than one week of 0 BSOD (Still I can't figure out why they are so random and happen only while playing) I suffered them again and decided to change from RAID to AHCI but the problem is not solved. What to do next? Is it possible that my hard drives are damaged in some way?

Crash still points to your hard disk file system. With the minimal installation you have, I would suspect hardware at fault. Given the hard disk related crashes, it could mean hard disk corruption, bad sectors, a failing hard disk, Windows files or registry corruption, viruses (unlikely, so we'll skip this for now), or memory problems.
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Event Viewer. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, click Application to let it load, right click Application and click Find.... Search for chkdsk or wininit to find the logs.
For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.
    Check a drive for errors

    Open Event Viewer
  • Run all Basic tests with SeaTools: S.M.A.R.T. Check, Short Drive Self Test, Drive Information, Short Generic, and Long Generic. Run the tests for all HDDs.
    SeaTools for Windows

    SeaTools for DOS
    Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics
    Bootable Hard Drive Diagnostics
  • Run a system file check to check Windows for corruption. Corruption can occur even with a clean install if the installation media is faulty; I have seen this on occasion:
    1. Click Start Menu
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Accessories
    4. Right click Command Prompt
    5. Click Run as administrator
    6. Type
      Code:
      sfc /scannow
      and press Enter
    7. Once it is complete, make note of the message. If it says Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and post back
    8. If the message does not say Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and do steps 1-6 again.
    9. You may need to do steps 1-6 up to three times with a restart in between each run to resolve all corrupted files.
    10. If you still have corrupted files after a fourth run, post back here with the following:
      1. Click Start Menu
      2. Click Computer
      3. Open your C: drive
      4. Open Windows
      5. Open Logs
      6. Open CBS
      7. Copy and paste CBS.log or CBS (it may not have the log extension) to a location you will remember.
      8. Compress (zip) the CBS file and attach the .zip file to your next post.

  • Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.
    Test RAM With Memtest86+
Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. You may want to run both Memtest86+ and the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

Disk Check done on both HDDs: corrections to the file system were made on the first HD (where OS is installed) and on the second disk check everything was ok. The second HD was fine. I post the logs.

SeaTools Tests: I've done successfully each test on both HDDs.

System File Check result: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations

MEMTEST: I haven't done it yet but I did it on December and after 7 passes there were no errors... I'll do it again tonight (if the weather is fine, 'cause a blackout can be a problem )

Make sure with memtest86+ 4.20 to run it when the system is cold and when it is warm. RAM can behave differently depending on its state.

Ok finally I've finished RAM testing, I ran memtest 2 times, the first for 22 passes when the system was warm, the second for 15 passes when it was cold. No errors in both tests.

I did also the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, extended version, for 5 passes. No errors found.

Another BSOD 0x124 happened some minutes ago (always while playing but the last BSOD was 9 days ago...). RAM appears to be fine, like Hard Disks... I think I've done all tests correctly but this continues to be a mistery :(

edit: I just realized that I use 4 ram sticks each of 1GB instead of 2x2GB like I said in the first post...

Alright, let's do some further hardware diagnostics. Provide the following information about your hardware so we can check compatibility:
Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot. To upload all screenshots, it would be best to:
  1. generate the images using the Snipping Tool,
  2. go to where the images are saved,
  3. right click in a blank area within the folder where the images are saved,
  4. create a new folder,
  5. name the folder CPUZ,
  6. select all the images,
  7. place the pointer over an image,
  8. press and hold down the left mouse button and drag the image (all images should move with it),
  9. drop the images into the CPUZ directory you created,
  10. create a compressed (zipped) folder of CPUZ
  11. upload the .zip file to the forums.

Hardware Diagnostic Software:
  • Run FurMark to test the display card for artifacts and temperature issues.

  • Run Display card memory tests to check the display card for memory problems.

  • Run Prime95 to test your CPU, RAM modules, and general hardware.

After a couple of minutes of FurMark with costant 98ฐC I had artifacts... my GPU has always been a bit warm but i never reach this temperature during gaming.

MemtestG80 and MemtestCL gave me 0 errors.

I haven't run yet Prime95, for how many hours should I run it? Thanks again

Artifacts are concerning. I would start an RMA for the display card if you are still under warranty with it.

Prime95: Run each test for at least 3 hours. If you can run each overnight, that would be better, but make sure you start the tests a few hours before you go to sleep so you can check the temperatures and verify they are safe. Anything over 85 C with that processor would be potentially hazardous.

My GPU is not under warranty so I can't start an RMA, but I believed that was normal to have artifacts when a graphic card suffers high temp for some time... is this wrong?

Prime95: I did the 3 torture tests, each for 3 hours with 0 errors/warning. Maximum temp reached by the 4 cores was 79ฐ/77ฐ/79ฐ/77ฐ , average temp was a bit lower than these values.

Artifacts should never occur, even under high temperatures. If high temperatures introduce artifacts, it indicates the card has somehow failed due to those high temperatures or other factors.

Please see my post in the following link regarding other possible methods to resolve your problem with the card; dust and/or foreign material on the display card contacts can lead to problems such as what you describe.

After some weeks of testing I want to update you with my current situation... I removed dust from inside but the situation wasn't changed, it began to get worse. I suffered several BSOD (nvlddmkm.sys) for the failing of nvidia driver, at Windows start it crashed instantly after trying to reset and refresh the display driver. I removed nvidia driver in Safe Mode, cleaned the registry with Driver Sweeper and reinstalled them (Forceware 314.07) but nothing changed. I did this many times with no luck before I replaced the GPU with another one, an old 9800GTX.

I had some problems with this too (high temp) but I was able to start windows, however sometimes I have PC crash while playing (with no blue screen) or while watching video (this happened only 1 time).
I feel this old gpu a bit unstable but before buying a new one I want to be sure that my problems were related to the GPU and not to other hardware, tests on HD, Ram, CPU were good but maybe I should think about buying a new system...
However I'm a bit confused on the fate of my 460 GTX, temps were fine in idle and while playing (they were dangerously high only during Furmark stress test), it just "died" for no apparent reasons? And this could be the cause of the very first 0x124 BSOD? I hope you can clarify a bit this situation... thank you very much.

If you have problems with stability using both cards, chances are the problems are due to other hardware. Replace the 460 GTX into the system.

Strip down your system to run only the bare essentials. Leave only the following items in the system:
  1. One RAM module.

  2. The Processor/CPU

  3. The Processor Heatsink

  4. One hard drive that has Windows installed on it

  5. The Power Supply.

  6. Connect only one monitor, one mouse, and one keyboard. Remove all PCI cards that do not need to be installed except to run the mouse and keyboard.

  7. Double check all power supply connections and make sure all cards are properly and firmly seated in their slots. A piece of hardware may be loose within the system due to being bumped or jostled. If unsure, remove everything but the CPU and heatsink, and then replace hardware one by one by gently but firmly placing the hardware back into the system.

As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:
  1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
  3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
  4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

If the above steps still do not provide a fix, remove the processor and heatsink and make sure none of the processor pins, either on the processor itself or on the motherboard, have been bent.
