Hi -

If you don't mind me asking, what was the reason for W7 reinstall? Was the system crashing?

Event Viewer log entries show odd date change during reinstall -
Code:
Event[2132]:
Log Name: Application
Date: 2005-07-01T02:29:59.000

Event[2131]:
Log Name: Application
Date: 2011-08-01T03:06:51.000
1,221 entries like this beginning during W7 installation on 30 July 2011 -
Code:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.
Was a USB storage device plugged in?

633 of these - but they did not start until 7 August -
Code:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0

Run HDD diags - start w/ SeaTools for DOS - 2nd link -
- https://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html
- Drive diagnostic utilities compendium - TechSpot OpenBoards

I do see ~30 entries that are likely BSODs (sudden system shutdown). Usually when no BSOD memory dumps produced or crash info logged, cause = unknown hardware failure, which may be the case here. The strange thing is the crashes did not start until 5 August.

2 interesting items -
- Cisco Network Magic was installed on 5 August
- N360 is installed (30 July); its firewall could be interfering with Cisco

Remove N360 w/ Norton Removal Tool - NIS/ N360 Removal - sysnative.com - MVP

Regards. . .

jcgriff..

Yes, the system was hanging on the welcome screen repeatedly after logging on, hence the reason for the W7 reinstall.

The reason for the odd date change may have been that I was running an old BearShare Beta version, which required a system date change back to 2005 in order to start up.

The USB device was probably a Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable Hard Drive 320 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive E05A032BAU2XK Black I was using as a back-up drive for the reinstall.

I'll run the rest of your ideas later..
Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary. . .

I really appreciate your detailed reply. It was the date I was most curious about. The system seemed too new for CMOS battery to die.

I would go after the software items 1st - N360 & Cisco. Then SeaTools for HDD -- or even try chkdsk /r from CMD screen.

Regards. . .

Well, it worked great at first when I deleted Norton, I downloaded MSE and was working for a while, then the hanging problem started again. I deleted MSE and Cisco and I can get the laptop working for a few minutes, then the hanging starts again.

More interesting may be the results of the SeaTools test, I have attached the results a document file that I transcribed from the test results.

Thanks,
Gary
