Recommendations:
BugCheck 0x124
You have a number of 0x124 hardware bugchecks. If the system is still under warranty, I would recommend sending it in to have diagnostic tests done and any bad hardware replaced.

Quote:
Before you proceed with the following, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: The steps that follow can void your warranty!!!
For your hardware stop 0x124 crash, use the following hardware checks.
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run all but the advanced tests with SeaTools for HDDs.
    SeaTools for Windows
    SeaTools for DOS
  • If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:
    • SSD firmware
    • BIOS Version
    • Chipset Drivers
    • Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
    • If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

  • Prime 95 Stress testing
    Prime95 Hardware Stress Testing Steps:
    1. Download Prime95.
    2. Navigate to where you saved the Prime95 files and unzip the files.
    3. Open Prime95 from the list, and then click Run in the dialog box if it opens.
    4. Click Just Stress Testing

    5. Run Small FFTs, In-place large FFTs, and Blend for a few hours each. Report back if CPU temperatures reach dangerous levels, if the system crashes, or if hardware errors are discovered by the diagnostics.

Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures.
  • Test RAM With Memtest86+.
    Test RAM With Memtest86+

Run the boot version of Memtest86+. Let it run for at least 7-10 passes (preferably more) or until errors show up.

If you see even one error, stop the test and do the following:
    1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
    2. Unplug all power sources to the system: unplug the power from the outlet/surge protector or PSU (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
    3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds (for your safety and the safety of the components) to close the circuit and drain all power from components.
    4. Remove the casing (or remove the RAM panel if it is a laptop).
    5. Remove all but one memory module making sure you are grounded while doing so. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
    6. Replace the casing (or replace the RAM panel if it is a laptop) and put the remaining memory module(s) in a safe, static free environment.
    7. If the problem persists, repeat steps 1-4 and move the memory module to another slot (while staying grounded, of course).

Do this until all slots have been tested. If all slots fail, the memory module may be bad. Test with one of the remaining modules. Continue one module at a time in one slot at a time until you find a good module and good slot. Test remaining modules in the good slot, test good modules in other slots to find bad slots, etc.

Some of the best information provided by a user who had RAM problems that were difficult to track down:

    Quote:

Okay, finally got the new identical RAM kit delivered, and had time to run some tests, I think the conclusion is indeed a faulty RAM kit:

First I ran a positive control test where I reset the BIOS settings to Auto for all items I had changed in a previous post, and re-installed the faulty RAM in the A2-B2 slots
--> Crashes as frequent as before, as expected

Then I placed the faulty RAM in the A1-B1 to see if it could be a faulty slot (mobo) issue instead
--> Crashes as frequent as before, consistent with the faulty RAM theory, but does not rule out the faulty mobo

Third step was to remove the faulty RAM and install the new RAM kit in slots A1-B1
--> Not a single crash in a total of 10 hours of gaming, where I used to have crashes every few minutes. Still consistent with the faulty RAM theory, but does not rule out the faulty mobo

Last step was to move the new RAM to the A2-B2 slots to test them:
--> Not a single crash in over 18 hours of gaming/intensive use.

So in conclusion I think it is safe to assume the mobo is fine and the old RAM kit is faulty, so I'll send it out for replacement.

Here are my lessons learned on this one:

    - Even though everyone hopes for a quick fix, ALWAYS perform test steps one by one (e.g. remove ONE supposedly faulty component and test right away). If you change multiple things and the issue is resolved, you won't know for sure what actually solved the issue.

    - MemTest results are definitely not 100% accurate unless you leave it to run long enough. I think it's pretty safe to say that running it for less than 10 passes is worthless.
Note that even with enough successful passes (20+ have been advised) it does not replace real-life situations a.k.a. whatever you usually do on your computer that makes it crash.

    - If the component you're suspecting is plugged in the motherboard, don't rule out the possibility that the motherboard itself is faulty, ideally have a negative control test with another similar component that is known to work fine

    - RAM issues are a pain to diagnose as you can easily have false negatives as I have had. Also there's nothing you can do with your computer without RAM

I'll mark this one as resolved, hopefully it can help other people.

Anyway, thanks a ton for your super fast follow up and very knowledgeable answers.

TL;DR: The RAM was borked in the end, tadaaa

I also recommend you update/replace/remove the following drivers:

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

It depends on the manufacturer, but I imagine most would be familiar with the 0x124 hardware blue screen crash. There are very few cases when a 0x124 is not due to faulty or incompatible hardware.

Before you send it in for warranty, I have one question I would like to ask:
Have you replaced any of the original hardware that came with the system, i.e. performed a RAM upgrade or swapped out the hard disk?

No, I have not replaced any original hardware. I haven't opened it.
That laptop was at manufacturer once , coz of bad pixel on the display.
They replaced it.

Does the same problem occur if you clean re-install Windows?

Clean Re-Install Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Quote:
WARNING:
  • Prior to doing the clean re-install of Windows, it is a good idea to download any network adapter drivers for your system. The drivers should be downloaded from the vendor support site (HP, Dell, etc.) or from the motherboard support site if the system is custom built (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc.). If you have a 3rd party wireless network adapter you installed yourself, make sure you have the drivers for it downloaded from the manufacturer of the wireless device. Save the drivers on a flash drive or external hard drive for use after the clean re-install so you can use your network adapter(s) to obtain Windows updates and drivers.
  1. Backup any important data to an external hard drive or a flash drive.

  2. Gather your license keys for software and for Windows to allow easy use in re-installing or activating Windows and/or programs on your system. Belarc Advisor can help with some license keys, but if your system was pre-built, the license key for Windows will not be the same as that on your sticker. If your sticker is not readable, contact your vendor for support.

  3. Shut down your system. Disconnect all external hard drives and any internal hard drives that are not being used for Windows installation. This will prevent accidentally formatting the wrong drive or installing Windows in place of important data.

  4. Insert the Windows Installation Media and restart your system.
    • Before you can use the installation media, configure your BIOS for the proper boot order. The installation media should be the first option in the boot menu, i.e. your CD/DVD drive or USB drive.

    • Refer to your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS and change boot order settings. Most system manuals can be found online through the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc.) or motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc.).

    • If you cannot find your installation media, please contact your system manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc.) to replace missing recovery discs or contact Microsoft to replace a missing retail copy. If you were not provided with installation media, you may need to purchase a retail copy from an online or local store.

  5. Press a key when given the message to Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...

  6. You'll see a screen that says Windows is loading files...; this may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your DVD drive or USB drive.

  7. Choose your installation options and click Next.
  8. Choose Install Now.
  9. Put a tick in I accept the license terms (after reading them) and click Next.
  10. Choose Custom (advanced).

  11. Click Drive options (advanced).
  12. Select the partition you want to re-install Windows on and click on Format.
  13. If you are sure of your choice for the partition, click OK.
  14. Choose the partition to install on and click Next.
  15. Windows will begin the installation process. The installation should appear as in the below image:

Once Windows is installed, follow the on screen instructions to set it up. After setup, reconnect all drives you intend to use.

Once you are ready, install drivers, Windows Updates, and programs in this order:
  1. Install the following drivers first. Obtain drivers from the vendor (HP, Dell, etc.) or from the motherboard support site (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc.) and display card manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, etc.) if custom built.
    1. Audio Driver.

    2. Display Card (Graphics Card) Driver.

    3. Chipset Drivers.

    4. USB Drivers.

    5. All other drivers. Also, Identify and Fix Problem Devices

  2. Windows Updates should be installed after drivers. Check optional updates for a list of any missing drivers. Try to find those drivers from your vendor or manufacturer rather than installing through Windows updates if possible. Install all important updates first. Then install optional updates that provide security or stability improvements to the system.

  3. Install programs one at a time with a restart after each installation. If you were having problems previously that resulted in a clean re-install, do your normal routine for a while after each program installation to determine whether that program might have been causing conflicts on the system.

Identifying and Fixing Problem Devices in Windows XP, 7, and Vista
  1. Click Start.

  2. Type Device Manager in Search programs and files, and then hit Enter.

  3. Browse for any devices with error icons, any devices that have the name Unknown Device, or devices under Other devices. For example, the following image shows a device under Other devices that also has an error icon next to it:
  4. Right click the problem device, and click Properties.
  5. Click the Details tab.
  6. From the dropdown menu, select Hardware Ids
  7. Make a note of the first item in the list. Run a Google search for everything before the second ampersand, i.e. PCI\VEN_80EE&DEV_CAFE

  8. Once you identify the problem device, visit the device manufacturer to obtain drivers for the device. If you have a pre-manufactured system, i.e. from Dell, HP, etc., then you should obtain drivers from the system manufacturer when possible.

Systems that come pre-manufactured by Dell, HP, etc. often require drivers that are specialized for those systems' power schemes. Using drivers from other sources may cause conflicts including crashes, freezes, blue screens, or slow performance. We strongly recommend that you only download drivers for your system from the vendor's sites when possible. If you have 3rd party devices you are using, i.e. a printer, those drivers should be downloaded from the manufacturer of the 3rd party device.

  9. For the example given, the Google search yields that the problem device can be fixed by installing VirtualBox Guest Additions. Here is the Google search used:
    PCI\VEN_80EE&DEV_CAFE
