Hi, I was told on another website to come here and ask about the virus infections on my pc. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Service Package 2.

Last night when I was just browsing the internet Windows Firewall popped up asking if I wanted to keep blocking some features of 'svchost.exe' unsure what to do I went 'keep blocking'. I was told it was a vital part of Windows so I though it was infected.

My PC restarted a few minutes later, when it turned on a little icon in the bottom left corner that was red with a white X was telling me this

'Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent [sic] data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware!'.

These viruses have changed my homepage to Google with huge fonts and all links keep redirecting me to random sites. I tried using the Malware tool with windows, but that failed and sometimes when I turn my PC on I have a black screen and my cursor so I have to keep restarting it. The virus also makes AVG 8.0 Free crash when it starts scanning.

When I scanned in Safe Mode last night, this was the log was:

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi,

The Combofix scan result is really good. You must be seeing the difference now.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

  • Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
  • When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both here along with the Kaspersky report

You're welcome.

I ran Kaspersky Online Scanner not too long ago and no threats were detected, all clean.
That's good to hear. The logs appear to be clean too. If you have no malware symptoms & issues, you should be good to go.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing and Think Prevention!

Hello again,

All the problems seem to be fixed until I found one small problem with AVG, when searching on Google or Yahoo usually AVG would scan my web results, but now it won't. My AVG toolbar also is unable to connect to my AVG meaning that it can't pick it up or something.

Due to that I've clicked on 2 malicious sites because of it, one blog that redirected me to one of those Antivirus 2009 websites when I exited the blog and another that had a HTML/Framer virus.

The following entries in your RSIT log are indicating that AVG and it's on-access scanners were up and running last time when you ran RSIT. So, if it's not working now, I would think that it's a new development.

Code:
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgscanx.exe

O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG8_TRAY] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe
O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgpp.dll
O23 - Service: AVG8 WatchDog (avg8wd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe

R2 avg8wd;AVG8 WatchDog; C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe [2008-08-29 231704]

You may have to re-examine your surfing habits, sites you visit, links you click on, etc. It's the most important aspect of prevention from malware and infections.
Let's start over and check if you've been re-infected.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Unzip it to your Desktop.

========================================================

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

========================================================

1. Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click Yes.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

========================================================

Next, please run RSIT.exe again and post the contents of log.txt along with the Gmer.txt.
