I have an old Dell Vostro 1015 laptop and I keep Windows 10 up to date on it.

I connect to the internet using a USB to RJ45 Ethernet Lan Adapter.

Recently, when I connected to one of the USB ports, I did not get a network connection (the other ports are fine). I connected the mouse to that port and it WORKS.

How can I diagnose whatever the fault might be and how do I identify the specific port, as there are several.

You're not making sense in the last part of your post. If ALL except ONE port is working with the USB ethernet adapter, then you've already identified it.

Thanks Stancestans.

I meant in device manager or any other troubleshooting tool.

If it's working with the mouse, you won't see an indications of failure in Device Manager.

Try removing the USB controller(s) in Device Manager and rebooting.

You can also manually reinstall the latest drivers available from Dell.
