Dell Optiplex 745 SFF - Vista Home Premium SP2

Recently, my speaker volume started going to full blast of its own accord. It does this not when I'm playing music but in between those times. I am using speakers with amplifier that came with an old XPS 410. They can get very loud.

I have to check the volume each time before playing music. If I forget, the music can be heard a block away. I'm afraid this will damage my speakers.

I tried muting the speakers and then unmuting them just before playing music. This does not work because the volume slider will eventually creep up to wide open somewhere between the time I last played music and the current time.

The only changes I'm aware of is a new wireless keyboard and mouse from Microsoft. The mouse is extremely sensitive. This volume change takes place when the volume window is not open.

Hi likekinds,

What player are you using for the music?

If you scroll the mouse (while the player software has focus - ie is the active window) then scrolling the mouse scroll wheel UP will turn your volume up, usually by default. I use VLC player and this happens a lot if I accidentally use the scroll-up wheel while VLC has focus.

The only other thing that comes to mind is there ma be a dedicated volume key on your keyboard that is accidentally being touched or engaged.

I use VLC also and I have never had this problem, before. I think you might be right about the keyboard. Let me check it out and get back with you.

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 900. Yes, it does have a volume key. I guess I could find which one it is and turn it off? I've never done that, before.

I found the key. It was clearly marked. I had never used it. I think maybe I'm touching this key accidentally when I put the keyboard in my lap. I'll try to be more careful, but is there any was to turn off this one key?

My question seems kinda foolish, now. But I have around 20 keyboards. Most were given to me. Some have a key for volume, some don't. I never paid attention as I never use this key. On my new keyboard, this key is not where it usually is. It is exactly where I grab the keyboard to pick it up.

I probably would have never figured this out without your suggestion. Thank you!

h to pick it up
