My crappy onboard card has been flaking out lately on my windows 7 desktop. I know enough to open the back and pop in a new card and install drivers but that's pretty much where my knowledge begins and ends :)

So I just need a 5.1 card that works and is easy to install. I know my board has pcie slots but I haven't opened it up since I replaced the hard drive. I think this machine is about 4 years old.

THANKS for the suggestions.

Have a look at these......

Computer Hardware, Headsets, Speakers, & Soundcards, Sound Cards, Creative Labs, ASUS, 5.1 - Newegg.com

Are there any on that list you might recommend?

My personal choice would be any of the Asus Xonar models......solid hardware/software and reliable.

I second the Asus Xonar recommendation. I installed an Asus Xonar DG PCI card because my onboard sound module shorted out and have been nothing but pleased with it. Newegg usually has one that's about $25 after rebate. One of the things I like best about the Xonar DG is that it has a built-in headphone amplifier.

Yep I run a Xonar DGX and I love it. The amplification makes all the difference. Many new mobos have that now but the clarity isn't quite the same as a dedicated card.

I third the Asus Xonar and especially the DGX as I had the identical situation to what you describe last year and wanted to get away from Creative and try something different and I like that card a lot.

Great why not mark this solved in the first post under "Thread Tools" in the first post.
