Hey guys,

My laptop, yes I know what you're thinking but keep reading, but it's not actually a horrible gaming laptop: ASUS N56VM at least so I've read.

Link: Asus N56VM Review & Rating | PCMag.com

I just brought this laptop second-hand and as I'm a novice I'd like to know how to treat my laptop properly.

- What do I need to install?

Drivers, programs, tweaks

- Can I game on this laptop and how do I?

- How to care for my laptop?

I've tried playing Neverwinter Online but I'm laggy as Hell. I did some searching and systemrequirementslabs.com tells me only positives.

Help? Please?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

What do I need to install?
First thing I would do is preform a full reset of Windows to remove anything left over from the old owner.

Second you should install Security Software.

For a Anti-Virus: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

For HOST File Protection: Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File

For ActiveX Protection: SpywareBlaster® | Prevent spyware and malware. Free download.

After installing that make sure to get the latest Windows updates along with drivers from the manufacture's website.

Once all above is finished then you can start installing other software you may need such as Microsoft Office.

And don't install software you will need, such as Adobe Shockwave or Java.

The laptop does have a dedicated GPU which is good! However laptop's are really not meant to be gaming powerhouses. They are more for everyday use. A desktop is really what you would want.

You do have an older GPU but should meet the requirements for that Neverwinter game. Have you tried just playing on Medium settings?

Also what is your internet speeds? Go to www.speedtest.net and post back the results.

How to care for my laptop?
Make sure the fans stay clean by blowing out dust, while the computer is off, with a air compressor. Make sure that you don't over spin the fans though! Use light blasts of air.

You can also care for your laptop by what you install on it.

I would read and follow all of these articles:

Hey!

Thanks for the reply.

When installing drivers from the manufacturers website which copy do I install? Do I install each program there from the lowest version to the highest?

Here's my results:

You can check in the device manager on which drivers are out of date and will need updating. If you did a full factory restore then most likely all of them will need it.

But check the device manager first.

Your internet speeds don't look all to bad so that shouldn't cause a huge problem.

Is your Graphics card settings on Performance?

I've set everything on performance. I really don't know what the problem is but the game has noticable lag on Low and I tried making the Nvidia settings angled for Performance.

Have I done something wrong?

I didn't notice there was a minimum and recommended tab on that website you listed for the game.

You don't reach the recommended so that may be why you seeing such bad lag.

[SOLVED] New ASUS laptop - ATK0100 driver problem
Hello all, Just purchased a ASUS K55 model laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. Whenever I start the machine, I get a message that tells me I have to install the ATK0100 driver. I googled it and found out that its a touchpad driver, and I've found it on the ASUS Downloads section for my model. The...

BSOD on Asus Laptop
Hey, I'm experiencing the BSOD with increasing frequency since I performed some updates in June. It's happening on an almost daily basis now and I'm afraid might be a hardware issue due to increased frequency when PC's been on for a while. The error code is always the same: "The bugcheck...

Hello, and thanks in advance for taking the time to help. First off, I couldn't find a thread with specific instructions on who to acquire all the specific log files for Windows XP - it seems the stickies only pertain to Windows 7 / Vista. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'll...

Asus X58c Laptop Dead
Hey Guys, I have an Asus X58c and it seems to be completely dead. The laptop doesn't do anything at all unless the AC adapter is plugged in so I'm guessing possible faulty battery. Even with the AC adapter plugged in though when you try and switch the laptop on. The only activity you get is...
