I have 3 computers at home. Lets say I want to play Left 4 Dead 2 multiplayer among the 3 computers, is there anyway to do it without using any software or the official server?

I think you can create your own server on your PC and get players using the same router to connect using the console to your internal IP (usually 192.168.0.? ).

I think Steam has a tool to easily set up a L4D2 dedicated server.

Do you know how to access the tools list with a load of Server tools and sdks?

It's with the downloads page.

If not, I'll make a guide for you when I am next on my PC

you can connect to each other using a Null Modem which you will have to buy. Otherwise you need to buy a Static IP from your ISP and set up a Dedicated Server with the Valve L4D2 Dedicated Server tool and have your friends connect to the IP using that.

I believe when you make a Lobby in Left 4 Dead there is an option to switch from Dedicated Server to Local. Check the options when creating a lobby.

Trouble is, I haven't met anyone who could connect when doing this - most likely you need a static IP.

No, i use to do it all the time when i had 3 other friends connecting. Back then there wasn't many WA servers.
You need to make sure you have the following ports forwarded.
27020-27039 UDP/TCP
1200 UDP/TCP
27000-27017 UDP/TCP
4380 UDP

Then before you launch L4D go to properties > Launch Options. And add "+clientport 27016".
Mainly because your Listen server will start a game on port 27015 which is also the same port that other clients will use. Seems to be a conflict but shouldn't happen.
And on a last note you can not connect via Friends List in steam. For some reason when you join to a listen server though friends it looks at the host internal loop (127.0.0.1) and not the actual IP. You need to give them your Public IP + port number.
Connect <Public IP>;<Port Number> (Others can type that into their console and press enter to connect to you.)
