Ok.
last week i restored my computer to factory default settings. I got the computer in June 2011. Have windows 7 profession 64bit. i fully uninstalled McAfee thinking that it was causing problems. I have Malwarebytes as the only anti virus installed. Will probably reinstall mcafee if all of this is cleaned up. Ive been suffering many blue screens over the past week. When i select windows updates>check for updates via control panel, i am greeted with: 'Windows could not search for new updates, Error(s) found, code 50080005

Solutions ive tried:
- performing a clean boot
- downloaded and used the windows update trouble shooter found here Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000
- downloaded and used System Update Readiness Tool found here System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 . All it did was launch a windows update standalone installer, installed some hot fix (which i did twice) and went no where.
- tried running cmd as admin, running 'sfc /scannow' that tells me 'Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service' so i followed the steps found here How to Fix "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service" Error When Running SFC in Windows 7 and Vista - The Winhelponline Blog , but then i got told another system repair was pending which needed a reboot but that didnt do anything.

All of the above things i tried Failed and i still stand with the error code 50080005. In regards to the last step i tried, i do have a pending xml file in my windows>winsxs folder. Its full of an insane amount of text when opened in note pad.

Also, each time before i get to my user log in screen on start up, it says configuration windows updates, loads for a moment, then says configuring windows updates failed, reverting changes, stuff like that.
I am at a loss.
Rhys.

Hi, you can either boot from the OS dvd or boot to safe mode and select the "repair your computer" option, select command prompt type:-

dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions (press enter ) restart.

Hello Rhys, welcome to TSF!

In addition to the excellent advice that jenae posted, could you upload your CBS folder please:

Export CBS Folder

  1. Click on the Start button and then click Computer
  2. Double click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder, and then inside that folder right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  4. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a folder on your Desktop called CBS
  5. Right-click on this folder again, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder
  6. Another new file, also called CBS, but this time with a different icon, will be created. Please upload this new file to the forum, here

Apologies. I had a couple of other forum posts happening but none of them helped.

I have resolved the problem my self. What ever windows update failed to install caused my system to constantly blue screen, freeze and self restart. I decided to, again, send my computer back to factory default settings.

This time i made sure nothing interrupted the over 100 windows updates and i am now running a fully functioning computer without problems. I never knew a windows updates could be so harmful!

Thanks for your assistance anyway.

Rhys.
