Hi everyone,
I am running Windows Vista 64bit Home Edition on an HP Pavilion Laptop. Before I start, I would like to say that I take very good care of my PC and therefore I highly doubt I have any spyware or virus infections. I have the following programs installed and I ran every single one of them today:

AVG 8.5
Ad-Aware (with live protection)
Spybot S&D
WinAso Registry Optimizer
HijackThis
Windows Defender
Windows Firewall
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Ccleaner
FolderSizes

Now to my problem. A few days ago, my laptop slowed down significantly for no apparent reason. The RAM seems to work at 2GB (out of 4) at all times, which is ridiculous. In addition, Firefox crashes after a few minutes of usage, regardless of whether its a blank page or a regular website.

I believe the problems occured immediately after I installed IE8, which also installed Family Safety Filter, an extremely annoying program that I can't seem to uninstall now.
Is it possible that the installation of IE8 triggered the problems? If not, can anyone give me any suggestions?

Your help is very appreciated.

This could be a reason. Registry cleaners/optimizers are no good for systems. They guess at what needs to be removed and sometimes if not most of the time remove vital registry entries. My internet explorer stopped working after using such a program and I suffered from a slow PC like you.

To rule out IE8, go back to IE7 and see if it improves. You can do this via system restore which should also get rid of the family safety filter.

Edit: I just noticed, you have Ad-aware running on live protection as well as AVG 8.5 which also runs on live protection. Please just keep to AVG using live protection, or they will conflict when accessing the same file, causing all sorts of havoc ranging from slow pc to blue screen of death.

To be honest, I've been doing registry optimization for over 3 years now and never had a problem with it. Same goes for Ad-aware and AVG running at the same time - no conflict ever.
Unfortunately system restore couldn't catch the installation of IE8 so it neither uninstalled IE7 nor the Family Safety Filter.
I can obviously do it manually but im not sure if I should do that right now since Firefox doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

Hi I can't say I had a similar problem, but I installed IE8 and hated it, so I uninstalled it and when I did it my IE7 was still there. Anyway, I had a Firefox problem once - couldn't add addons, couldn't update, etc. So I uninstalled it completely, bookmarks and all, then downloaded it again and it worked fine.

I too use CCleaner and never had a problem with it.

Hi there fibe,

Could you please post a list of all installed Programs you have. You can do this via HijackThis under Misc Tools. Also provide in your next post a Scan Log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Once I have this info I can start giving you detailed information on how and why you laptop seems slow. :D

Cheers GamingJon

Yeah I've never really been a huge fan of Firefox. Up until now when my system slowed down so bad, because Firefox uses less cache and just overall works a little faster.

Anyway, here are the HJT and Malwarebytes results:

Hey there, thanks for replying btw. However you seem to ave missed the point. I asked for a list of all the installed programs and you posted a HijackThis log. Could you please post again and include all of the programs in a easy to read list?

Another thing I saw in your running processes log was that you had C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe running three times could you tell me on average how much memory these processes are using?

Once I have that info I can help you much more in speeding up your laptop.

Btw re-scan with MBAM and remove all the infected items that are found.

Thanks GamingJon

As you can see the Windows Live Family Safety Filter is not even installed, that's why it's so hard to uninstall.
I've noticed that I have IE running three times too. That's why I think my system is slowing down. They are usually about 50000K each, but I've seen one of them go as big as 120000K.

Hi there, you need to unistall a log of things you dont use reguarly,

Are you using Microsoft Office Trial or has it expired?
Do you use Mobile Me from apple?

Answer these questions BEFORE removing anything!

First I recommend uninstalling the following programs;

Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office suites Microsoft Corporation
LimeWire PRO 4.18.8 Lime Wire, LLC
PartyPoker PartyGaming
Vuze
WinASO Registry Optimizer 2.6 X.M.Y International LLC

If you disagree or you want to keep some of these program installed let me know and we will continue to the next step.

HP QuickPlay must go - absolutely NOT compatible with Vista x64 or Win 7 x64. Will hang constantly - 30 secs.
Un-install via usual program un-install method.

QuickPlay also has boot drivers.

This MAY be gone after un-install -
Go into Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), enable hidden devices via View tab
Expand non-plug and play devices
One of the first s/b 22D78859-9CE9-4B77-BF18-AC83E81A9263
2x-click and disable it

Get rid of all Java updates, then go to www.java.com & get newest update

I think Ad-Aware big problem. Have seen too many BSODs, app hangs, crashes caused by it. You should only have 1 firewall (Windows Firewall), spyware - Win Defender and 1 anti-virus. Adding more causes internal conflicts - they fight each other & you end up loosing.

ALL HP services can be disabled as well. Big waste of system resources. When driver updates needed, they will come thru Windows Updates or you can periodically go to HP driver download, allow scan of system & review drivers
https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...n&dlc=en&cc=us

How much Installed RAM - x64 should have 4GB min.

I have HP x64 dv7-1020us running Windows 7 beta x64 right now. Like it whether Vista or Win 7.

Regards. . .

Any program that came preinstalled on your HP is 100% capatible with vista 64 bit. If HP Quickplay was preinstalled than there is no reason to remove it.

Not true.

Ask your own HP Techs about x64 & quickplay. It will hang on boot every time.

Regardless, the sheer number of HP system services are unnecessary and a waste of system resources. HP is not the only OEM guilty of this.

I still recommend the disablement of all HP system services. I did so when running HP OEM version Vista. Since then, have installed full retail Vista Ultimate x64 as well as Windows 7 x64 Ultimate - NO HP system services and NO problems.

Only other issue was HP bad choice of IDT audio codec. Pure garbage.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it.

So first of all, GamingJon:
No, I do not use Office Trial and I can't find it on the list of installed programs. All the other programs that you named I do use and I don't believe they cause problems.

jcgriff: I agree with you on the HP Quickplay, it's useless and I don't need it so I uninstalled it. However, I tried uninstalling one of the Java Updates and a black screen showed up. After about 2 minutes my computer restarted itself, said it wasn't shut down properly and asked what mode I wanted to start it in. It took very long to start it up after, so I'm not sure I wanna mess with the Java updates.
I checked the Device Manager at the location you suggested but there was no entry such as "s/b 22D78859-9CE9-4B77-BF18-AC83E81A9263".

And yes, I have a 4gb RAM.

Thanks

cccleaner is a great program i have never had any problems with using it but I have had to reinstall a few times because of major unrecoverable screwups I did when I aggressively used WinAso Registry Optimizer it screwed up my OS to a point where I thought that it would be allot quicker for me to just reinstatll the whole OS then to try and find what the problem was . the funny thing is i am a stubborn person so it took three times of messing up my registry before I gave in and now only use CCleaner and also revo uninstaller both applications are portable and both work great if all else fails you could always use recover or if you still have the backup registry files ( thats f you made any back ups) you could just use them and see if it fixes your problem

OK I decided to uninstall WinAso, I basically don't use it that much anyway and CCleaner has a registry cleanup option anyway so I'm just going to stick to that.

I understand your reasons for Java. But you should be able to get rid of all and update w/ newest version.

I would at least to to www.java.com and update.

I run some systems here with NO Java.

Ok, some program that the HijackThis Log shows up are not listed in Program and Features. (The normal way of uninstalling via control panal). I however allways use "Revo Uninstaller". It find programs that Programs and Features cant find and scans the registry and HDD for left over files and folders. This way when you remove a program all of it data as gone, and now left lying about using space up on you HDD cause slow downs.

I recommend downloading it from here https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_..._download.html. Install and Setup.

Then the program will search for all installed items. You might be supprised to find things here you never knew you had installed.

1) Look through the long list and be ruthless, remove anything you don`t know what it is or programs you dont use.

If you unsur e of a program, post back here and let me know and ill give you instructions on whether you should remove it or not.

2) Then I would download "CCleaner" and run the "Cleaner" and remove anything it finds. DON`T RUN THE REGISTRY CLEANER YET!

Then I would use a degrag utility. Some people think that the built in defrag
program to vista is sufficient. However I disagree.

Post back once you have complete the 2 steps above and ill let you know which defrag utility to use.

Hope this helps

Oh dont forget to change the view to "Details" in Revo Uninstaller and look to find out which program is using the most space. Post bk here letting me know that.

Thanks
