I've been having this problem for awhille -- approximately 30-50% of the time, when I put my computer in sleep mode and try waking it up, it simply doesn't wake up. I hear it turn on (fan starts running, etc.) but the screen is black (forced to hold down power button to reboot)...or it goes to the startup screen (but won't finish starting up -- have to hold down power button to reboot).

I have an HP Compaq 8710w laptop with Windows 7 Professional (32-bit).

Here is what I have done already to try to fix it:

-Updated drivers
-Tried turning off wireless before putting to sleep
-Changed power plan from "High Performance" to "Balanced".

No dice. Any other ideas?

You can try to go to A computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 stops responding when you put the computer in sleep mode (S3) or resume the computer from the S3 mode and download hotfix to your computer.

Two questions:

1) How do I install the Hotfix? I downloaded the correct one (it's a .exe file), and then ran it and it said it unzipped some files to my computer. Is that it?

2) Betranu, thank you for the instructions. However, what exactly do you want checked and what unchecked. I assume this is under the "Power Management" tab...the first box is "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" (currently checked), the second (unchecked) is "Allow this device to wake the computer," and the third (checked) is "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer." Which should be checked and which unchecked? Thanks.
