I didn't have a windows password set on my computer. Yesterday I signed out and restarted, and windows wants a password all of a sudden. I tried a couple of password cracks but nothing worked. I really need some help here.
I have mosey back up if I need it but I would like to get back in as quickly as possible with no loss of permissions.
Here is an interesting aside: my brother called me yesterday and said the same thing happened to him. He is running win xp. Could this be some kind of back door or some other mal-ware?

There are password reset CD's that you can find online that will allow you to reset an XP account/password.

The one I use is the Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. Works for all Windows versions.

I assume since you are posting in the Windows 7/Vista forum and your Profile lists Windows 7 that you are not asking about Windows XP. We don't usually help with cracking passwords as per forum rules.
You can enable the hidden administrator account in Windows 7 and then log in as Admin and reset your user password. You will need the Admin password if one was set.

I tried that it didn't work since there was no password set for the account to begin with.

Then your profile got corrupted, Log in as the Hidden Administrator, create a new user account with admin rights, log out of the user your in and log in as the new user. Now under C:\users\[username] find your old profile and copy the files over to the new one. Use the new profile.
