Greetings! HP DC7100, XP installation worked fine for half a year after upgrading to Samsung F3 1TB HDD. Without an apparent reason the system started shutting down unexpectedly as if the power plug is being pulled. Does not want to reboot after power loss unless BIOS is entered first. One time red led flashed 4 times accompanied by the 4 system speaker beeps. This power loss seems to occur more often on cold boot. OS was changed, memory checked, disks checked, power supply and MB seem ok too but the problem persists.

Was the Red flashing LED the case Power Button?
From HP- Power button LED blinks 4 times with 4 beeps = Bad Power Supply

Re: Unexpected system power loss.

Now it is apparent to me that the PSU is the problem. too bad there is no software for psu diagnostics, I have found that one exists but can not locate the download, so I am just going to look for a replacement PSU. Thanks again for your help Tyree.
Cheers!

Re: Unexpected system power loss.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no software to test a PSU accurately.
The only sure way to test a PSU, for the normal user, is substitution.
