I have a friend who is running XP PRO 32 Bit...with 6 GB of RAM.
The BIOS recognizes 6 GB...while XP recognizes 3 GB.

I know that XP and Vista 32 Bit will do that...and XP and Vista 64 Bit will read all six.

My question is...Is the extra RAM doing him any good?

Not really its a limitation of the 32 bit operating system
