Question

I brought two 1GB DIMMs from eBay recently for my nan's PC. She already had 512MB of PC2 4200 and Vista was running VERY slowly so I suggested some more memory may help.
I installed two DIMMs of 256MB PC2 3200 temporarily and said I would order her some more memory. After installing the 1GB DIMMs and powering on the machine, I got nothing on the screen and a POST beep code: 1 short, 1 long.
The BIOS is Phoenix Award v5.11 and after searching on the net I found the Award BIOS has only 2 beep codes. According to their website, one is to signal that the graphics array is not working and anything else relates to a RAM issue.

- I KNOW the 1GB DIMMs are DDR2 because they fit in the slots.
- I KNOW PC2 3200 works because the two 256MB sticks I installed as a stop-gap worked fine.
- I tried the new DIMMs individually, with a mixture of the other DIMMs and in different slots with the same result.

The motherboard is a HP M2N68-LA

I did wonder if the single/dual channel thing may be causing this but I don't know if this matters with DDR2 onwards. I'll be trying them in another PC that can accept DDR2 but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions apart from faulty DIMMs?

Thanks

What MB are you using?

Try just the RAM 1 at a time (without old RAM) if you still have the same issue then

the problem is likely due to incompatible/faulty RAM.

Thanks
I thought it may be a faulty batch as both DIMMs are having the same problem.

Nice! I'll give that a go.

I did notice that this page states the mobo doesn't support PC2 3200 and yet I had two sticks working fine in it. What's the deal with this?
