Have a problem where my computer was starting to power up when I hit power switch (fans would turn on and things would start), but very shortly, everything would just die like the power in the house went out. The only way I found to get around this was to flip the power switch off for a few seconds and turn it back on. After doing this the computer would make it to the customary one beep and then all the loading screens and Windows screens would do their thing and I would be good to go for rest of the day.

Now, all of the sudden, the flip the switch trick won't work as well. The computer takes 7+ tries sometimes of flipping the power switch off and then on to work. Sometimes it even gets through the one beep and to the loading screens before it still just dies. When it does get that far, it asks me if I want to start in safemode too (I assume because the computer is shutting off inappropriately).

Any ideas on what the problems is?

Specs of 4+ year old custom computer:

3.5 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

OCZ600SXS
600W

I forgot to mention I also have internal DVD-ROM and DVD-RW drives in the computer. Never had a problem over 4+ years until about a month ago when it started doing this. Maybe I was working the PSU to the limit.

If it is the PSU, should I replace with a 700W to be safe and give myself my leeway?

a quality 550w or better should run it

check your current psu first with a multi meter

Do you suggest any brands as quality? I always though OCZ was good, but I have been reading some terrible reviews by consumers as of late.

Trying not to spend a fortune either. I am not trying to be cheap, but trying to keep it in the $50-80 range if possible

New PSU won't POST; old PSU works
I'm trying to upgrade a 250W Bestec PSU with OCZ 600W SXS. The motherboard takes 20-pin without -5V pin. Bestec PSU has no -5V pin, and the system runs fine. I put in OCZ PSU, and fans (CPU, PSU and case) run, there is power to CD-ROM and hard drive, but motherboard won't POST -- no video signal...

Is there something I must do for a brand new PSU to turn on? Like simply plugging in the power cord, wait a few minutes or so till enough power is collected in the psu?
