Is having 1GB with a 2GB of Ram bad?

OS: Windows Xp Home sp3 32bit



Hi my friend wants me to buy a Ram chip for his Vista computer it takes DDR2 it already has 1GB Ram but his thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 which is why 2GB would be better then another 1GB of Ram but would it be fine having one 1Gb and the other 2Gb?

It may work, but try and match the ram as closely as possible. Same brand, speed, and timings. Even then, the computer may not boot with mixed ram, but you will have maximized your odds of it working. Ram can be quite picky on what it will run with. Check the make and model if OEM built, the motherboard if custom built, with the ram manufacturer's configurator, and see what is compatible with whatever it is. There are limitations, which vary by motherboard, on things like speed, amount per slot, total amount. Your best bet is to find a guaranteed compatable stick, though a kit (matched pair of sticks) is optimum.
