So this laptop clearly says on its cover: HP Elitebook 840 G3
I searched google for "HP Elitebook 840 G3 tech specs". Right?
Landed here:
HP EliteBook 840 G3 - Specifications | HP® Customer Support
and the page title is : HP EliteBook 840 G3 - Specifications

so we are on the right product, right ?
and this is what it says:
Memory
Feature
Description
Standard
DDR3L PC3L-12800 (transfer rates up to 1600 MT/s)
Two SODIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory
Both slots are customer accessible/upgradeable
Supports
4096 MB total system memory (4096 MB x 1)
8192 MB total system memory (4096 MB x 2)
8192 MB total system memory (8192 MB x 1)
16384 MB total system memory (8192 MB x 2)

Went to Amazon, looked for the DDR3L PC3L-12800 and bought the Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3L 1600 MT/s (PC3L-12800) SODIMM 204-Pin - CT2KIT102464BF160B

this one:

When those arrived, they are completely incompatible with my laptop.... they don't fit in the slot. WHY??

Attached is a pic of the present, the old, the 4GB ram that is installed by default and is working on the laptop....

Interestingly, searching for Rx8 PC4-2133P-S on amazon does not give any memory results.

Your model number may have different specifications according to the market where it is sold.
Your original Ram appears to be DDR4 2133MHz.
Also when searching the model number for your specific system, use the label on the base as it has more detail required, including a country code in the alpha numerics.
