Greetings,

When using Microsoft Flight Simulator X or EVE Online my computer crashes. The screen goes blank (the monitor displays as if disconnected) and sound in the background just loops continuously. The only way out of this is to flip off the power switch and start it back up. Sometimes it can go for days without doing this, other times the computer will crash after one hour of using either of these two games, or 5 minutes.

I have updated all my drivers (video, audio, etc.) and am using the latest one. I ran Memtest86+ and no problems were found. I also ran DSKCHK, no issues. My system specs will be listed below, following the error messages. For the first time I found these two messages after the latest crash:

Both the PSU and the video card I installed myself. Cords are not blocking any fans, etc. Lavalys Everest Home Edition says that my CPU is running at 41 C, even when I have flight simulator running.

This BSOD issue has definitely been increasing in frequency, though I believe the first time it happened was within a week after purchasing the computer (about 7 months ago). One of the first things I did was install the graphics card and PSU.

It only happens when playing these games (I do not have any other games, so I can't test with others) not when doing any other tasks.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/assistance.

Gotta run right now, but the 117 error is usually associated with video drivers.

Download the latest driver for your video card from the nVidia website
Uninstall your video stuff from Control Panel...Programs and Features...Uninstall a program
Install the drivers that you've downloaded.

I'll post back later tonight with more details (unless someone else analyzes the dumps first :0)

Yep, it looks like the video drivers.
Here's the line with the video driver:
Code:
fffffa60`0240f000 fffffa60`02f15980 nvlddmkm nvlddmkm.sys Fri May 01 02:58:45 2009 (49FA9DA5)

It looks fairly new, so I'd suspect a corruption of the drivers. So, you'll have to uninstall the current drivers before installing the freshly downloaded one's.

Good luck! Let us know how it works out for you.

Thank you for your reply USASMA,

I did a clean driver install but the problem persists. No dump file was created, the one I uploaded last night was the first time windows displayed a message that a BSOD had happened, though the computer has clearly BSOD'd all the other times.

I downloaded SpeedFan and monitored CPU temps while using flight simulator, and 4 temp variables in the SpeedFan program seem to be affected: GPU, Core 0, Core 1, and Core 2. GPU rose from a steady 48 C while doing standard Windows activities, to 62-63C when using flight simulator. Core 0, 1, and 2 varied from 60-66C. Does this sound a bit high?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you may have another problem and that might be causing the temps you are seeing which are over 60c (the top we recommend). The power supply you have the Antec - EarthWatts 500-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply is not a real strong power supply...in addition, we recommend that you have a bare minimum of a 550 watt (quality brand name and that doesn't include Antec supplies) power supply for the video card you have. Try a Corsair 550 power supply if you can.

See if a friend might loan you a larger and better quality supply to try in there and see if that helps. My opinion is that several of the problems you are seeing is from that very issue.

BTW, not saying you don't have other issues as pointed out by the other posters, but the PSU issue is a real concern at this point in time.

I'll look into a new power supply. What about outside temps. I live in Hawaii and do not have air conditioning, so temperatures in my house are probably between 78-85 F. Would this affect computer temps as well? I.E. should I get an external fan or something and focus it on the tower?

Temperatures where the computer is located surely do cause the temps in the case to rise. You need at least a fan in the back pulling hot air out of the case and a fan in front of the computer pulling in cool air. The heatsink fan should blow down on the CPU and any side fans pull in cool air and the top fan (if any) pulls hot air out of the case (heat rises).

Why not try to borrow one before you spill for a new one and that way you would know without spending some money if that is one of the issues.

Can you open up the side of the case and point a house fan at it? If that decreases the frequency of the crashes then it's probably a heat issue.

The temps from SpeedFan seem pretty high to me, but I haven't kept up on the limits for CPUs or Video cards.

Unfortunately the only person I know with a desktop does not have an adequate PSU. I'll go pickup a house fan tomorrow and see if that helps at all. I stress tested using Prime95 and after 3 hours of that I get no errors but Cores 1-4 temps get up to 71 C so perhaps it is a heat issue. If the fan helps I guess I should probably replace my computer fans from stock to something heftier.

The temps are high. That can be caused by a few things:
>Inadequate case cooling

>Thermal paste no applied correctly

>CPU not seated clear down tight on the motherboard

>Weak power supply.

Thank you for your advice and assistance Tumbleweed and usasma. And phooie on the computer tech who advised that the Antec - EarthWatts 500-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply would be sufficient for the Nvidia 9600GT. I'm putting in an order for a CORSAIR 650w TX Series 80 Plus Certified Power Supply as well as new case and CPU fans (upgrading from stock). Ambient room temperature is fairly high in my apartment so better cooling is probably something I should get anyway. Opening the case and blowing a house fan into the unit is dropping my core temps down a good 4-5 degrees C.

EDIT: I look at my PSU and though it is 500W it says max load is 406W, and when I use a PSU calculator, my minimum need (I don't think I'm putting in everything) is 436W continuous, so it def. looks like I need a better PSU. Sigh, this is one expensive learning experience.

Purchased the Corsair 750W TX, hopefully this should be sufficient and allow room for some some future hardware upgrading (not hard-core gaming, I know).

That 750TX will power a pretty decent video card and you made an excellent choice. Do let us know if that solves your issue and if not, we will try to help. I do know that you needed the better power supply in there regardless of further issues.

Greetings,

Installed the Corsair 750TX. Install went without a hitch, I took the opportunity to clean out all the dust and move my cords around to better the airflow.

The computer still runs really hot, in fact, 3-5 C higher than before. I have yet to have the issue where my screen just goes blank. IN the past I would monitor temps and when my core temps hit about 66 it would happen. Now it gets up to 68 and stays running.

It did not go above 68. I think that while the psu was necessary, my overheating problem still exists. Perhaps I should look into a cpu cooler?

I believe that there's an overheating issue with something that isn't monitored by Speedfan (or your sensors are damaged). This seems to be supported by your experiment with the house fan.

What it is is difficult to say. For example, it could be either your RAM, or your Northbridge overheating (as they don't normally have a dedicated cooling solution).

And, the other day at work I had an nVidia GT120 1gB card that was overheating even though the fan was working. I found out by accident - burning my finger on the card when poking around inside the case. I pointed an 80 mm fan at the video card and the problem was solved.

Maybe you can get a small fan (80mm or smaller) and use it to "point cool" some of the interior components while subjecting the system to the same stresses that caused it to give issues before?
