I know my hardrive works fine as it works on other PCs. I just got a used computer with windows 7 installed,
but I cannot find it on my computer when plug in.
I plug two thumb drives, one of them worked, the other appeared in my devices but is not accessible.
My external hardrive wont appear anywhere. Any advice is appreciated, I have a lot of data on the drive so formatting isn't
a option. Any advice is appreciated...
I am new to windows 7 and really have no idea how to fix it. Perhaps im missing a driver? I was missing the wireless driver when I bought this computer, so its possible... Any help is sooo appreciated as I have been struggling for hours with this.

I am using a dell 3330

USB Mass Storage Drives like USB Flash Drives and HDD's do not require a driver in Windows. It is provided by the Windows OS.
Trouble shooting an external USB drive is the same in Window 7 as it is in earlier and later versions of Windows.
When you first plug in the drive, Windows should show New Hardware Found. If not, With the drive plugged in, first go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, Right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, are there any devices with a yellow flag? If so, right click and Uninstall, then unplug the USB Cable from the computer end and restart the computer. If the external HDD has it's own power adapter, use it and plug it directly into the wall and not a Power Strip as this diminishes the power. Plug the USB cable into the Back USB port (desktop) and not the front or through a Hub as these ports are weaker.
If there are no yellow flags in the Device Manager, Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. There should be a USB Mass Storage Device, listed, this is your External, also under Disk Drives, it should list the HDD manufacturer that is inside the enclosure of the external.
If that is all good, then go to Start/Search and type diskmgmt.msc, Right click the diskmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Disk Management window, in the lower pane it should list your HDD. Is iit assigned a drive letter? Does it list the File System as Unallocated Space? Or at the Disk # (ie) Disk1, Disk2 etc does it say the drive is Not Initialized?

thankyou very much for the reply.
I am not sure what the problem is. But I went to device manger.
And I do not see my hardrive there.
But I do see a yellow exclamation mark over the following things. In the other devices.

PCI Simple Communications controller
SM bus Controler
Universal serial bus USB controler
Unkwon device

I do not see my hardrive in in the disk management window either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Go to the Dell Support/Download drivers site
Type in your Service Tag# or search for your Make and Model # choose your version of Windows 7 (ie) 32bit or 64bit. Download and install the Intel Chipset driver first, If you have USB 3.0 ports (Blue) then download the USB 3.0 driver and Intel Rapid Start Technology as well. Product Support | Dell US

Thankyou for the replay. I installed the chipset, but I cannot find the intel rapid start technology. I am using a lattitude dell 3330 windows 7 64 bit. I will keep trying. I seem to still have a yellow mark on

Unknown serial bus USB controller
Unkown devices.

Actually I see now according to the dell page.
I have not installed the chip set yet...
Although I have installed a couple of times and it said it was successful. So im not sure what I should do.

Go to the Dell Drivers page.
Under Chipset, download the USB 3.0 driver. Also Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver When you download a driver, it unzips to a place on your C: drive. Usually C:\Dell\Drivers. Take note of where it unzips to. Once it unzips, it should start to install. If not, browse to the unzipped location, open the driver file, and find Setup.exe. Right click it and Run As Administrator. It may take up to 5 minutes to start the install Wizard.

Thankyou for your help I was able to get the USB driver to install.
But when I went to instel the Rapid Start, the one reccomended by Dell, it told me I dont meet the Min requirements to install that.

I am getting the same message when I try to upgrade my 3000 intel video card to 4000.
I am not sure what the issue is there.

What version of Windows 7 do you have? 32bit (x86) or 64bit? If you don't know, right click Computer and choose Properties. I think you have 64bit Windows and you are trying to install 32bit drivers, which would give you this error. You can only install 32bit drivers on a 32bit system, and 64bit drivers on a 64bit system.
On laptops, the video card is soldered onto the motherboard, you cannot Upgrade it without removing the chip and replacing it with another. You cannot Update your Intel video driver from 3000 to 4000, because you don't have a 4000 chip

I have windows 64 Bit. ooh ok I didnt know that about the video card.... Guess I got dupped... Because the guy I bought this old lap top from, said it had 4000hd graphic card on it. There was no video card on here, so I went to dell and installed the 3000 by accident and tried to fix it by installing the 4000 than got that message.
