Recently, I closed the lid on my laptop while my WD external hard drive was plugged in (I ave done this many times without anything adverse happening). When I went to open the hard drive on my computer, it wouldn't open. The drive shows up in device manager but not in "My computer". I tried troubleshoot in device manager but it didn't work. And recently, the driver failed to install. I have a lot of data on that drive and I would like to get it working again.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried properly removing the drive using "Safely Remove" hardware?

If you look in device manager, under disk drives, is the drive properly identified by model number in the properties?

no it isn't. it does say "WD" and that the device is working properly, but it won't initialize

Download western digitals data lifeguard diagnostics and run all the tests against this drive. Let us know the results.

it said that there was a cable error but i tried the cable on a different device and it worked. It also said that it failed every other test. i just tried running the test again and it won't read my drive. I know that the cable is working but it says that it isn't.

That is a generic error that indicates it can't communicate with the drive. Next step is to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly as an internal drive on a desktop and see if BIOS recognizes the drive. Can you feel the drive spin up?

Looking that way, it's just hard to be sure while the disk is in the enclosure, the USB interface masks a lot of information, and also doesn't pass some of the low level commands that diagnostics may need. If warranty is not an issue, pull the disk from the enclosure and attach internally to a desktop to verify.
