Hi all

My first post on this forum. From what I've seen on here, people are really great at providing help, and hopefully my issue can be resolved.

Thanks for reading this, and any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

My 1TB WD My Passport external hard drive was working fine, until recently when on connecting to my laptop, it didn't show up as an accessible drive on 'This PC', but as a 'Local Disk'. However, it shows up fine on 'Device Manager' (please see attached). Physically sounds like normal, without any unusual sounds and such. A windows pop up appears asking me to format the drive to use it.

Really would like to recover some of the data on it.

After browsing around, downloaded testdisk and tried that to recover. Below is what I get:

It seems to recognise the correct disk geometry.
On selecting 'Analyse' > 'Quick Search' > 'P' List files, get the attached screenshots, with the final message being 'Can't open filesystem'.

PS: Is there a way to attach images in-text by uploading the pics onto tinypic and such?

Any help will be really appreciated. Please do let me know if you require more information.

Thanks again for reading.

The USB Controller inside the Enclosure may be failing. You can disassemble the enclosure and remove the HDD inside. Then you can attach the HDD internally to a desktop computer, or via a USB Adapter, Dock or another Enclosure with a Power Adapter. Run Test Disk again. If that fails, I have had the best luck with GetDataBack. It is free to download and scan, if it finds your files, you will have to pay for it to recover them. You will need another drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I'll have a go at that.

Do you reckon I should try and repair MFT on testdisk? Or maybe rebuild BS?

Regarding GetDataBack, I've tried it, but it couldn't pick anything up.

I think I know what you mean, let me see if I can explain.

You can do it with 3rd party hosting by using the url for the image enclosed in [img] tags but you don't really need to do that.

When you have finished uploading your attachments, as you have, close the Manage Attachments window and look at the top of the post reply box.

To the right of the smilies button, you can see another button for managing attachments. Click the down arrow and you will see the list of attachments.

When you get to the end of a paragraph where you want the image to appear, press enter to make a line break and then click the above mentioned down arrow.

Click the image in the list and you will see something like this.

[ATTACH]Some numbers[/ATTACH]

When you click Preview, you should see the image.

Use this method to position the rest of your images.

I hope I've explained this well enough, if not, post back and I'll do what I can to help.

Did you remove the drive from the Enclosure?
You can make an Image file of the drive using TestDisk or DDRescue and you can try and scan the image with either program for your files instead of the failing drive
However, If GDB couldn't pick up any files, then the drive has totally failed and will not able to be recovered.

Thanks for your reply.

No, I haven't yet removed it from the enclosure.

Can you please guide me on making an image file on testdisk. Also tried using ddrescue, but I must admit, I was sort of lost. Any advice on that will also be much appreciated. Should I try to make an image file in the current state, i.e. without removing it from its enclosure?

I tried GDB in the current state. Could it be that GDB might read the files if I remove it from the enclosure?

Hi. Thanks for your detailed explanation. I'll have a go when I'm next on a PC.

How to create an image file with testdisk: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Image_Creation
DDRescue is a linux based program and I didn't do well with it either.
The closest Windows program to DDRescue is HDD Raw Copy HDDGURU: HDD Raw Copy Tool If none of these tools can view a file system to make an image File, then the drive has totally failed and cannot be recovered unless it is take to a Data Recovery Specialist with a Clean Room.

Hi. I was looking into opening the enclosure and connecting it to an adapter. My HDD is the one in this video below. Will I still be able to find a suitable adapter to connect this HDD to?

Unfortunately, if your drive has the USB 3.0 port soldered on to it, as in the video, you will not be able to connect it to the computer via the standard SATA connector. So you are stuck with using the proprietary USB 3.0 cable to connect it. If the software mentioned doesn't see the drive then your only other alternative is to send it off to the Very, Very Expensive Data recovery Specialists.;

I wonder if a good computer repair shop could repair this drive enough to attach it to a SATA to USB 3 adapter to see if that fixes the drive. Cheaper than drive recovery.

Hi,
Try running your external drive on another computer to see if it really is damaged or if the problem is with your laptop hardware or software.

If more then one computer can not see the drive or, any of the afore mentioned software, no local shop is going to be able to help you either. If the Data is critical, you can send it off to the Very, Very Expensive Data Recovery Specialists

Pardon my mentioning it, especially after a data-injury incident when it's too late: backup.
A 1T disk is cheap. Buy 2. Ping-pong backups between the two. Each backup disk will be a backup of the other. If your data change frequently, make backups frequently.
